SUMMARY OF ASSIGNMENT
Under general guidance of the Director of Special Education plan provide and evaluate varied learning experiences of visually impaired students in cooperation with other staff parents and the public.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Identify the educational needs of visually impaired students and resources available to meet those needs in the least restrictive environment. Develop and complete evaluations and IEP goals and objectives relating to those needs and deliver services as identified in the IEP.
- Provide instruction in compensatory skills academic skills living skills orientation and mobility communication skills use of residual vision and low vision aids recreation and leisure skills vocational and career education cognitive development and social and motor skills.
- Assist in identification of students with visual impairment(s).
- Instruct students in self-advocacy related to adjustments to their visual impairment(s).
- Provide school personnel parents and community workers information and demonstration of instructional strategies assessment strategies and management skills needed for visually impaired students.
- Interpret and provide medical data as relevant to visual impairments to school personnel and parents.
- Coordinate the acquisition distribution and storage of commercial teacher generated and volunteer produced media and materials required for the visually impaired educational program.
- Obtain medical information necessary to provide services to students and register annually for Federal Quota Funds.
- Obtain comprehensive low vision evaluations for students with residual vision.
- Maintain liaison with agencies serving visually impaired students.
- Provide assistance to classroom teachers in modifying and adapting materials.
- Serve as a resource in determining the need to purchase and use specialized equipment.
- Complete all state federal and district paperwork for special education in a timely manner while meeting all audit and monitoring criteria.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience
- Baccalaureate degree in Education with courses emphasizing the teaching of visually impaired students to include Braille reading and writing methods of teaching visually impaired students basic orientation and mobility basic ophthalmological course and impact of visual impairment on education.
Required Knowledge Skills and Abilities
- Thorough knowledge of subject areas taught.
- Ability to interact positively with students professional associates and patrons of the District.
- Knowledge of the rules for programs providing services to children who are served through the special education programs in the Clover Park School District.
- Knowledge of current instructional methods materials and trends in teaching visually impaired students.
- Knowledge of state and federal rules and regulations for special education.
- Ability to incorporate literacy instruction into other areas of instruction.
Certification and Licenses
- Washington State teaching certification and endorsement in Special Education and/or the equivalent credential for teaching the visually impaired and/or endorsement for Orientation and Moblility
- Valid Washington State Drivers License
- Ability to gain access to Joint Base Lewis-McChord

WORKING CONDITIONS
Work is performed in the school to and between school sites is necessary. Teamwork and high productivity requirements create frequent extra hour days attendance at meetings before and after work. Must be able to talk and use fingers hands and arms and to listen carefully and focus while filtering out normal office noise. May involve negotiating steps ramps uneven surfaces and going outdoors in all types of weather to reach some classrooms or other buildings. Tolerance of occasional loud noises and ability to sit and/or stand for prolonged periods of time are required.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
Employment with Clover Park School District is conditional pending completion of a Washington State Patrol and Federal Bureau of Investigation fingerprint background check as required by RCW28A.400.303. (NOTE: All associated background check fees are the employees responsibility.) The fingerprint scan must be completed prior to the first day of employment.

Employees who are anticipated to work 630 hours during the school year (September 1 through August 31) are eligible for medical dental vision long term disability and basic life insurance benefits.

Building Centered Responsibility - 5 days
District Centered Responsibility - 2.5 days
