The Town of New Tecumseth is accepting College and University Co-op/Intern student applications to fill one Co-op/Intern position to commence in May 2026 for either a 4-month 8-month or 12-month placement.

Eligibility/Qualifications:

  • Registered as a full-time post-secondary student at an accredited academic institution pursuing a degree or diploma in Planning or equivalent field of study
  • Are legally entitled to work in Canada
  • Returning to full-time studies in the next academic term
    • Note: students in their final year of academic study who do not intend to return to full-time studies are eligible for student employment until the time they graduate
  • 1 year of previous work experience required. Previous experience in a municipal environment is preferred
  • Valid G Class drivers licence
  • Awareness of applicable Provincial legislation including the Ontario Planning Act Condominium Act the Ontario Heritage Act and the Ontario Municipal Act.
  • Awareness of municipal government including the roles and responsibilities of stakeholders and the basic requirements of development review processes.
  • Awareness of the need to interpret and apply Provincial County and Town policies regulations and provisions using sound judgement as part of the evaluation of development application review processes.
  • Awareness of progressive planning principles concepts and practices in terms of achieving long-range community planning objectives.
  • Under the direction of the Manager Development Planning or Manager Policy Planning this position is responsible for supporting the Planning and Building Department to meet service delivery needs.
  • Responsibilities include support for Planning Act applications including Committee of Adjustment such as research and analytical work preparation of notices report writing and the co-ordination of stakeholder input. Responsibilities also include reviewing building permits for zoning compliance responding to planning inquiries and supporting planning staff with the completion of general initiatives including policy initiatives.


Responsibilities:

  • Support planning staff with general customer inquiries via phone counter and email as well as the completion of zoning compliance requests.
  • Support planning staff with the review evaluation and analysis required to process Building Permits under the Ontario Building Code (OBC).
  • Support planning staff with the review evaluation and analysis required to process a range of development applications submitted under the Planning Act including those for Site Plan Minor Variance and Consent.
  • Support planning staff with the coordination of input from stakeholders including applicants agents consultants developers other municipal staff municipalities and agencies as part of the processing of development applications.
  • Support planning staff with research and analysis in emerging trends new planning requirements and the completion of special studies and field surveys.
  • Work with planning staff to prepare staff reports and other communication materials related to strategic policy matters and/or development applications.
  • Attend meetings with planning staff in a learning capacity and support the team in responding to general inquiries from the public respecting planning matters.


Wage Rate: $20.05 plus 4% vacation pay and OMERS pension plan (optional enrolment)
Hours: 35 hours per week 8:30 a.m. 4:30 p.m. Monday to Friday
Start Date: May 4 2026
