OVERVIEW: The Resident Director (RD) reports to a Full Time Staff Member in the Department of Fraternity and Sorority Life (DFSL). RD duties include providing live-in oversight of University-owned fraternity and sorority chapter houses assisting alumni advisors and House Corporation members primarily in maintaining the chapter facilities.
TERM: This agreement is for the 2026-2027 academic year from July 26 2026 to July 24 2027 or upon graduation or withdrawal from classes. RD agreements are not automatically renewed annually. Staff members seeking to return must submit an intent to return form prior to being offered a new agreement. Reappointment is contingent upon the staff members continued ability to meet all qualifications successful completion of tasks satisfactory performance evaluations by their supervisor and demonstrated growth in their position. Reappointment is not guaranteed.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Be knowledgeable about DFSL departmental and university policies procedures and resources including our mission and vision guiding philosophy milestones and theories that guide our work.
Meet with support and communicate with chapter officers and alumni; attend chapter and House Corporation meetings and maintain a visible presence with these stakeholders.
Oversee facilities and administrative tasks to ensure that the facility is maintained as a positive living/learning environment: move-in and move-out daily walkthrough of facility room inspections managing building security waste management and life safety maintenance reporting and monitoring external vendor performance.
Participate in DFSL staff activities (e.g. Fall and Spring training; RD DFSL and House Director staff meeting) and retreats as well as other Division of Student Affairs and University professional development opportunities throughout the year.
Meet attendance expectations at community-wide events as well as those hosted by the local chapter.
Demonstrate mature responsible decision-making.
Maintain an open line of communication with DFSL staff regarding events happening in the chapter facility including but not limited to weekly and emergency reporting (e.g. contacting the University of Maryland Police Ambulance Fire Department etc.)
Participate in a regular on-duty cycle with other Resident Directors which involves staying in fraternity/sorority facilities regular duty walks and responding to all issues.
Show flexibility and adaptability in the performance of duties in order to respond to changing needs and situations.
TIME COMMITMENT:
As a general guideline RDs should anticipate an average of 10 hours per week of regularly scheduled responsibilities (e.g. time in the facility staff meetings duty or additional responsibilities). Before opening and closing dates RDs should expect to devote an increased amount of time in their house.
Houses are open year-round except during Winter break when the University and chapter facilities close for one week (RDs will need to use time away for any time outside of Dec. 25 - Jan 1).
Houses are open during the summer but in a variety of settings (regular chapter occupancy summer conferences restoration work or storage). RDs who cannot fulfill expectations during the summer will forfeit their stipends and benefits.
QUALIFICATIONS: Must be enrolled as a full-time graduate student at the University of Maryland for the duration of the academic year. Experience in residence life facilities and Greek-letter organizations preferred. The ability to ascend/descend stairs is an essential function of the position. DFSL has many scheduled meetings that are essential to the Resident Director role. There is flexibility in scheduling however failure to attend commitments can result in termination of the position.
REMUNERATION:
five hours of tuition credit* per semester (four credits during summer sessions); a stipend of at least $17713 (based on graduate school rates); and health insurance. (*may vary by program)
Room and board (provided by the host chapter meal service is provided while the chapter house is open)in a two-room suite with private bathroom utilities wireless internet land-line phone and cable.
5 days of paid time away and one weekend away per month from job responsibilities.

Education:
Must be a registered graduate student in good standing enrolled in a degree program at the University of Maryland and must be making satisfactory progress toward the degree.
