The Department
The Administration Department is comprised of five principal operating divisions: City Council City Attorney City Manager City Clerk and Office of Sustainability/Pico Rivera Innovative Municipal Energy (PRIME). The Administration Department handles a wide range of administrative functions providing overall administration oversight coordination and direction to City departments striving to provide responsive and consistent customer service to the community and its employees. It ensures that all departments are applying policy consistently and moving forward in the direction of City Councils priorities and goals. Additionally the Office of the City Manager provides each City Department supervision and service-level objectives as directed by the City Council.
The Position
The Intern will perform entry-level responsible and professional customer service and clerical and administrative duties for the Administration Department. The Intern will work on various substantive projects and in the process acquire an overview of city government.
It is the Citys hope that the Intern selected to participate in this internship will develop a better understanding of their community and City operations and that the experience will pave the interns road toward personal growth and a productive career in local government.
City Hall is open Monday through Thursday 7:00 AM - 5:30 PM.Hours will vary between 7:00 AM and 5:30 PM. This position may also be required to work non-traditional hours including nights early mornings weekends and holidays based on special events community group meetings and City Council meetings.
Essential Duties
The ideal candidate will have the ability to perform the following essential tasks and duties:
- Effective public speaking and interpersonal skills; confidence in communicating facts and information to city staff and to the public.
- Strong writing skills with an ability to organize/analyze data type and proofread a variety of documents including memos rough drafts forms copies or notes.
- Perform a wide variety of routine clerical work including filing.
- A self-motivated work ethic with the ability to be a supportive team member and independent worker and a desire to work in a diverse team setting.
- An enthusiasm to help the City of Pico Rivera meet objectives.
- The ability to plan organize and prioritize multiple tasks and projects.
- Work with minimal supervision.
- Perform related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Be at least 18 years of age.
- Proficiency in the following programs is desired:
- Microsoft Word
- Microsoft Excel
- Microsoft Access
- Microsoft PowerPoint
- Microsoft Teams
- Bilingual in Spanish is desired.
Education and Experience:

- A valid Class C California Drivers License or ability to obtain a Class C California Drivers license within 10 days of hire and a safe driving record throughout the course of employment. City employees are registered with the Department of Motor Vehicles Employee Pull Notice Program.
Veterans credit will amount to 10 points to be added to the interview score. Proof of honorable discharge must be submitted with the application materials in order to be eligible for veterans credit. Veterans who wish to utilize this credit must have served on a full-time basis (not reserve or auxiliary) in the armed forces for a minimum of six months (180 days).
