Description of Work

The primary purpose of the Nursing Eye Care Consultants (NECC) is to assist individuals with maximizing use of their residual vision and to prevent blindness and restore vision by serving as a consultant for the Medical Eye Care Program. The NECC is responsible for planning scheduling evaluating and documenting low vision assessments and making recommendations for low vision -house training on conducting low vision evaluations is provided.

This position provides low vision assessments for individuals referred from DSB Vocational Rehabilitation and Independent Living programs. Assessments are conducted in client homes workplaces and other community settings. Therefore regular travel in a multi-county area served by the DSB Charlotte District Office is required.

Staff and consumer education is an important part of this position. The NECC provides individualized consumer/family education on their specific eye diagnosis. Education is also provided to the public through outreach events to consumers at group trainings and to staff on an individualized or group basis.

NECCs provide reviews of recommendations for medical eye care services to determine if individuals may qualify for financial assistance based on current policies. They determine when specific reviews must be directed to the DSB Consulting Ophthalmologist.

Salary Range: $59732 - $98557

Recruitment Range: $59732 - $71468.00

  • Ability to provide services over a multi-county area.

  • Demonstrated work experience interpreting medical records and applying the information to determine a plan of care.

  • Ability to effectively communicate information to patients families and staff in a concise and descriptive manner verbally and in written form.

  • Experience in working with individuals who are visually impaired or blind.

This position will close at 11:59 p.m. the night before the end date.

The Division of Services for the Blind provides services to people who are visually impaired blind and deaf-blind to help them reach their goals of independence and employment.
