Position Summary
Special Education summer programming for Somerville Public Schools (SPS) offers experiences for students with disabilities who require extended school year services (ESY). In conjunction with the general education summer programming and enrichment programs SPS ESY programming is working to provide extensive opportunities for programming in the least restrictive environment with a strong focus on direct specialized instruction for students in the preschool through age 21 environments. The Assistant Director of Special Education ESY will work collaboratively with the Director of Special Education ESY including direct daily interaction collaboration and support with the Early Childhood Director.

In collaboration with the Director of Special Education ESY and Director of the Early Childhood Summer programming will supervise summer school staff and all activities.
- Supervise the maintenance of accurate records & data on the academic process and attendance of students.
- Conduct staff meetings as necessary for the proper function of the summer program.
- Assist in the screening hiring and assigning of summer program special education staff.
- Maintain high standards for students and positive behavioral supports.
- Assess all summer program activities and provide recommendations for the improvement of future summer programming.
- Collaborate with the Director of the Capuano Early Childhood Summer Program as well as designated SPS Department Chairs to coordinate plan assure implementation with fidelity for all children in the general education and special education programs.
- Perform any and all other duties as assigned by Director of Special Education.
Qualifications Knowledge Abilities & Skills
- Special Education license with a focus on Early Childhood and relevant teaching experience (min. 5 yrs. successful teaching experience Masters preferred).
- Experience supervising multi-dimensional programs including student safety program planning supervision of staff interns volunteers managing supplies etc.
- Experience in curriculum development and leading/planning/providing professional development.
- Experience in working with students with special needs in the areas of behavior management with a focus on ABA.
- Ability to work collaboratively with summer school staff and families to support program access and effectively address issues that may arise.
- Ability to maintain a safe and healthy environment for students.
- Bilingual/multicultural communication with diverse students and families preferred.

- Lifting and Carrying: Most positions require the ability to occasionally lift and move objects weighing up to 10 to 25 pounds such as packages or equipment. Some roles may rarely require lifting up to 50 pounds.
