Other Conditions: General funds to begin approximately August 2026 contingent on satisfactory performance operational and program needs actual staffing requirements and availability of funds. Position may be converted from 9-month to 11-month or 11-month to 9-month as operational needs are required. This is a non-remote position; on-site presence is required.


Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Under general supervision teach a range of developmental and transfer-level English composition and literature courses and perform other teaching-related duties that include but are not limited to planning organizing and independently carrying out instructional and non-instructional assignments.
  2. Develop curriculum and support courses to meet student needs and college objectives including but not limited to courses that contextualize English at the developmental level and for CTE and transfer programs.
  3. Instructional assignments may involve in-person distance education and other instructional formats.
  4. Develops and updates curriculum teaching methods materials and assessment strategies to improve learning based on assessment results.
  5. May involve developing and teaching noncredit and off-campus courses for targeted groups in support of allied programs.
  6. Participates in division campus institution-related service activities as well as community-service.
  7. Maintains disciplinary expertise through professional development to and enhance curriculum quality.
  8. Must be available for evening and weekend teaching assignments teaching on campus off-campus at military bases and/or at secondary education sites (high schools). To teach on a military base Department of Defense security clearance will be required. To teach Early College courses for DOE schools background checks will be required.
  9. Commitment to community college principles and philosophy is essential. The College emphasizes the open door concept and serves all student and community populations.
  10. Perform other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Masters degree in English; OR
  • Masters degree in English Composition or Literature; OR
  • Masters degree in Fine Arts (Creative Writing).
Note: Minimum qualifications (degrees and credits) must be earned from regionally or nationally accredited postsecondary colleges and universities recognized by the U.S. Secretary of Education and met by the effective date of appointment. If qualified applicants are not available others will be considered as acting instructor.

Desirable Qualifications:

  1. Ph.D. in English.
  2. Community college experience in teaching developmental English education and/or corequisite developmental education.
  3. Community college experience in teaching college (transfer) level English composition.
  4. Evidence of ability to contextualize course content of developmental English courses and English courses for CTE and transfer-level programs.
  5. Experience with learning management systems (LMS) platforms and instructional technologies for classroom and distance education.
  6. Experience developing curriculum for English courses including Business Writing.
  7. Track record of effective instruction in teaching English courses using various course delivery formats (e.g. in-person hybrid online accelerated).
  8. Demonstrated ability and experience in assessing student learning and using results to guide instructional strategies for continuous improvement in student learning.
  9. Demonstrated ability to write clear prose as substantiated by publications or writing samples and ability to communicate effectively verbally.
  10. Demonstrated ability to work cooperatively with peers department chairs and administrators.
  11. Understanding of and experience in working with all student populations including Native Hawaiians adult students students with a range of abilities and students from a variety of cultural and economic backgrounds.
