Position Purpose/Summary: This is a legal department internship position assisting in the Legal Services Office for the City of Springfield Public Schools with the primary areas of concentration in the fields of litigation municipal and education addition the Law Clerk will be assigned a special project to review and categorize the Springfield School Committee policies consistent with MA statutes regulations case law MASC (Massachusetts Association of School Committee) Model policies and DESE (Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education) guidance.
Essential Functions:
- Assisting the Chief School Counsel in preparing court documents researching the law on a multitude of litigation matters and general contract matters.
- Providing administrative support for legal staff in researching the law to provide opinions to the Chief School Counsel department heads and the Superintendent.
- Drafting legal memoranda and pleadings and providing support to Chief Legal Counsel and the departments Senior Legal Analyst/ Paralegal.
- Performing related clerical support as assigned.
Knowledge Skills and Abilities:
- Thorough knowledge of legal research processes.
- Ability to make work decisions in accordance with laws rules policies and procedures governing legal matters and work performed.
- Ability to write legal memoranda pleadings and contracts.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees involved parties and the general public.
Education and Experience:
- A student currently enrolled in the second year of an accredited law school.
Special Necessary Qualifications: None
Technology Equipment Systems and Tools: Requires advanced computer skills in Microsoft Office Suite such as Outlook Word PowerPoint LexisNexus and/or WestLaw legal research platforms preferred.
Working Conditions: Work is mostly performed in an office environment. Regular and predictable attendance is a requirement.
Physical Requirements and Potential Hazards: While performing the duties of this job the employee is frequently required to sit; use hands or fingers; handle or feel; talk and hear. The employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus.
