Job Summary
Mount Sinai Health System is seeking a Specialty Laboratory Technologist (Histocompatibility) to join our cutting-edge Histocompatibility and Immunology Laboratory (HLA Lab). This role is crucial in supporting Solid Organ and Bone Marrow Transplant Programs by performing serological and molecular HLA testing to ensure optimal donor-recipient matching.
The ideal candidate is a highly skilled laboratory professional with a strong attention to detail problem-solving abilities and commitment to regulatory compliance. This position offers the opportunity to work in a fast-paced high-volume laboratory that directly impacts patient outcomes.
To assure that the Employee is technically competent possesses required education and experience as well as other behavioral skills and performs their responsibilities accordingly. To demonstrate that the employees performance is evaluated and appropriate training- in service is provided. To assure that the employee is cognizant of the philosophy standards objectives and policies of the Department and the Hospital Center.
Responsibilities
- Perform serological and molecular HLA testing to support solid organ and bone marrow transplantation.
- Conduct tests such as HLA typing (based NGS/RT-PCR) crossmatching antibody screening and flow cytometry-based assays.
- Analyze interpret and report test results with a high degree of accuracy and efficiency.
- Perform and document quality control (QC) procedures calibrations and equipment maintenance to ensure reliable results.
- Ensure strict adherence to regulatory agency requirements (ASHI CAP NYS NMDP UNOS etc.).
- Maintain detailed documentation of patient requisitions testing records laboratory logs and compliance reports.
- Identify and troubleshoot instrumentation or test discrepancies escalating unresolved issues to the supervisor.
- Work closely with transplant coordinators clinicians and other healthcare professionals to facilitate timely and accurate test reporting.
- Notify the supervisor or clinician of any critical out-of-range or conflicting test results.
- Engage in team discussions and problem-solving initiatives to enhance laboratory workflows.
- Monitor and maintain laboratory supplies including QC materials reagents calibrators and consumables.
- Ensure proper storage of temperature-sensitive materials routinely checking laboratory freezers refrigerators incubators water baths and heat blocks.
- Adhere to safety protocols for handling biohazardous samples and chemicals.
- Participate in test validation laboratory research and development of new testing methodologies.
- Stay current with advancements in histocompatibility testing through continuing education and professional development.
- Contribute to quality improvement projects that enhance lab performance and efficiency.
- Assist in the training and mentorship of new technologists and laboratory personnel.
- Attend at least four continuing education sessions per year to stay updated on the latest practices in histocompatibility and immunology.
- Engage in proficiency testing programs to ensure competency and skill enhancement.
- Strong analytical and critical thinking skills for test interpretation and troubleshooting.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills for daily interaction with physicians nurses and transplant coordinators.
- Ability to multi-task and prioritize workload in a fast-paced high-volume laboratory environment.
- Proficiency in basic computer skills laboratory information systems (LIS) instrument software and DonorNet.
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy to ensure high-quality patient testing.
- Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations especially dilutions and reagent preparations.
- Commitment to team collaboration and continuous improvement.
Organizational/Managerial
- Participates in the departments performance improvement activities.
- Maintains patient/employee confidentiality in the management of information.
- Observes the Health Care Systems compliance policies.
- Participates in Competency and Proficiency testing programs reports results back to Supervisor.
- Observes all Safety procedures and precautions: a) Uses Personal Protective Equipment such as Lab Coats gloves mask shield etc. b) Disposes off contaminated waste and samples as specified by the hospital and laboratory manual.
- Wears hospital ID badge at all times while on premises.
Work Environment & Physical Requirements
- Moderate physical activity including standing bending lifting (up to 15 lbs.) and typing.
- Exposure to infectious and hazardous materials including blood tissues and chemicals.
- Ability to handle human tissue samples (e.g. spleen lymph nodes blood).
- Must comply with biohazard safety protocols and wear personal protective equipment (PPE) as required.
- Availability to work on-call hours and flexible shifts as needed by the department.
- Compliance with hospital policies regulatory requirements and laboratory best practices.
Qualifications
- Bachelors degree (B.S.) in Medical Technology Clinical Laboratory Science Biology or a related field meeting NYS Department of Health (DOH) technologist standards.
- 01 year of experience in a clinical laboratory setting preferably in Histocompatibility Immunology or Transplantation Laboratory.
- New graduates with strong laboratory skills are encouraged to apply.
- New York State Clinical Laboratory Technologist License (issued by DOH/Office of Professions) or Restricted Technologist License in Histocompatibility required
- Preferred:
o ASCP certification (American Society for Clinical Pathology).
o ASHI Certified Histocompatibility Technologist (CHT) or Certified Histocompatibility Specialist (CHS).
