POSITION SUMMARY:
The candidate must demonstrate the ability to understand and support the mission of the South Bend Community School Corporation as it relates to the education of English Learners (ELs). The candidate must possess basic knowledge of second language acquisition and related terminology. The candidate must be able to work effectively with linguistically and culturally diverse students and families. Fluency in both English and Spanish is required. This is a twelve-month position.

MINIMUM EDUCATION REQUIREMENT:
Bachelors degree preferred

KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Ability to translate and interpret between English and Spanish
  • Excellent organizational and time-management skills
  • Proficiency in Google Suite applications
  • Ability to maintain a professional demeanor at all times
  • Ability to work independently and take initiative
  • Ability to exercise tact and discretion when interacting with students parents and staff
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of staff and student information
  • Strong oral and written communication skills in English and Spanish
  • Basic understanding of WIDA English Language Development (ELD) Standards and WIDA ACCESS

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

PROGRAM

  • Implement and adhere to the policies and procedures of the South Bend Community School Corporation
  • Oversee the completion of Individualized Learning Plans (ILPs) for students in home schools and other assigned buildings
  • Assist with the identification assessment and placement of English Learners
  • Monitor the academic progress of EL students and report data to the Director of Bilingual Services and building principals; complete required monitoring documentation
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date records for each EL student including student information sheets ILPs Home Language Surveys report cards PowerSchool and Ellevation documentation
  • Assist with scheduling services for the following school year

  • Assist with the implementation of summer Bilingual and Migrant Programs
  • Supervise and coordinate instructional and tutorial services provided by Instructional Resource Specialists
  • Provide Tier 2 instructional support as needed
    Support students and families in accessing appropriate support services
  • Receive distribute and maintain an inventory of instructional and program materials
  • Assist with monitoring non-certified staff attendance and completion of Time and Task logs where applicable
  • Attend Bilingual Services Department staff meetings and building-level meetings as directed by the principal and Director of Bilingual Services
  • Participate in building-level and district-level professional development activities
  • Perform other duties as assigned

STUDENTS

  • Develop and maintain positive supportive relationships with EL students
  • Identify students experiencing academic or school-related difficulties and make appropriate referrals
  • Assist in addressing the unique academic and support needs of migrant students
  • Coordinate instructional supports for identified students
  • Provide instructional interventions under the direction of a licensed teacher as needed

PARENTS

  • Coordinate parent and student participation in school activities and programs
  • Inform and advise parents regarding student academic performance including WIDA ACCESS IREAD 3 and SAT/ILEARN assessment results
  • Develop and facilitate workshops and activities for parents and students based on identified needs
  • Assist parents and students in completing school-related forms and documentation
  • Conduct home visits when necessary

BUILDING STAFF

  • Coordinate case conferences with school personnel and parents
  • Assist building staff with parent communications and student support services

  • Demonstrates sensitivity to the needs of EL Migrant and Bilingual students and their families
  • Maintains strict confidentiality regarding student and family information
  • Demonstrates consistent daily attendance and follows established procedures for reporting absences

  • Works cooperatively and collaboratively with Bilingual Services Department and building staff
  • Maintains a positive and professional attitude
  • Adapts to changes in work assignments and responsibilities

  • Contributes innovative ideas and supports program improvement
  • Recognizes situations requiring staff intervention and responds appropriately

SPECIAL NOTATION:
This position requires flexibility in scheduling and may include evening work hours.
