Description of Work

POSITION TYPE: Permanent 12-month SHRA FLSA non-exempt

NCSSM and the Humanities Department foster an environment of collaboration across departments and divisions and support community-engaged service and research.

Description of Duties:

This position serves as the primary Technical Director and Facilities Manager for NCSSMs performance venues. Specifically this position oversees administrates and schedules performance facilities. Additionally this position specifies supports and maintains live event videoconferencing and streaming equipment and systems for all activities related to public performance and institutional gatherings in the NCSSM ETC Auditorium and Lecture Hall and other spaces hosting events throughout NCSSM.

Expected Work Schedule: Monday - Friday 40 hours per week. Some overtime and weekends as needed.

Flexible 9:00-6:00 weekdays additional hours outside academic schedule when supporting NCSSM events.

Facilities Management
*Schedule events rehearsals work calls for technical crews (set construction lighting hang/focus/programming strike of set following productions) load-in and load-out of touring or external user groups sound checks changeover between successive events.
*Ensure compliance with both facility-specific and code-mandated safety conditions and procedures.
*Coordinate multiple user groups in a facility within the same time period e.g. class meetings during the week of technical rehearsals prior to a musical theater production with regard to facility scheduling and meeting the technical requirements of each user.

Facilities Operation
*Lighting and sound design for widely varying productions e.g. theater dance live musical ensembles.
*Provide isolated video and audio signals for streaming broadcast networks.
*Live audio mixing using a digital console.
*Programming and live operation of lighting systems theatrical and architectural using a modern control console.
*Multi-track audio recording via a digital audio workstation.
*A/V system management and operation via Crestron control network.
*Scenic design and construction.
*Operation and maintenance of scenic construction shop equipment and tools including table and miter saws drill press router dust collection system and full complement of power and hand tools.
*Load-in/set up and load-out/strike of each event restoring the facility to ready state with regard to removal of scenic elements repertory lighting gear hang and programming audio gear maintenance and storage counterweight rigging system and theatrical draperies returned to standard positions scenic construction shop cleaned and restored and dressing rooms cleaned and restored.

Technical Procurement & Asset Management
*Day-to-Day Procurement: manage the selection and purchase of consumable and construction supplies for ongoing projects.
*Capital Equipment Acquisition: Oversee the procurement of durable technical assets including audio visual and lighting hardware.
*Strategic Sourcing: Prepare Request for Proposal (RFP) documentation for large-scale systems and integrated network infrastructure.

Engineering
*Work with audio networking hardware and software for distribution of uncompressed audio over a discrete ethernet network for streaming broadcast and room-to-room connections.
*Work with conventional and intelligent lighting fixtures and their control systems both theatrical and architectural using wired and wireless five-pin and ethernet-based DMX and TCP/IP protocols.
*Work with A/V networking hardware software and communication technologies such as NDI and Dante to support streaming broadcasts and videoconferencing from and among NCSSM facilities.

Technical Mentorship and Safety
*Theatrical Production: Lead student crews in the design setup and operation of lighting sounds and audio engineering systems.
*Scenic Construction: Instruct students in scenic design carpentry methods and professional rigging standards.
*Facility Oversight: Enforce and model rigorous safety standards and industry best practices across all production spaces.
*Studio and Field Recording: Mentor students in professional audio engineering and multi-track recording techniques. .

Technical liaison with and for internal and external users of NCSSM facilities
*Discuss and determine technical requirements of scheduled events and schedule support crews as necessary.
*Offer consult and support to NCSSM departments organizations and community members in areas of expertise e.g. acoustic analysis of classrooms to determine appropriate acoustic treatment for optimal sound; advice regarding and installation of appropriate LED lighting fixtures in art studio for improved color rendering; system troubleshooting and student training for Student Activities mobile PA system.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences

BUDGETED SALARY RANGE: $51134 - $52000

Hiring salary will be determined based on education experience equity budget and market considerations.

  • Knowledge - Technical: Full knowledge of arts theory and practice in the area of assignment. Thorough knowledge to develop solutions to resolve problems at a high-complexity level.

  • Arts Design and/or Project Management: Ability to manage projects that require directing the work of others and with latitude on actions or decisions. Ability to prepare specifications develop schedules manage project managers and monitor projects resulting in timely project completion. Ability to manage accomplishment of all milestones within the approved design plan; ability to conduct final on-site inspections to verify project requirements. Ability to investigate research and integrate new concepts to improve design.

  • Program Management: Ability to establish procedures to collect review and maintain information and schedules. Ability to manage multiple or complex events involving the coordination of vendors laborers and/or other services. Ability to coordinate the work of others. Ability to manage a moderate-sized budget. Ability to research purchase and maintain specialized technical production equipment.

  • Safety and Health Compliance: Ability to ensure safe operation of varied and complex machinery equipment and/or devices. Ability to perform routine maintenance of equipment machinery and/or devices utilized. Ability to maintain service logs and repair schedules. Ability to arrange for repairs and/or replacement of equipment machine materials and devices within budget.

  • Instruction: Ability to develop and coordinate instruction of others in the operation of specialized equipment and/or techniques.

Minimum Education and Experience

Bachelors degree preferably in theatre arts and demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Preferred:

  • Graduate of a College or University with study in theater and theater operation.

  • Two to four years experience in theater management and technical experience in the operation of stage sound lighting design and stage rigging.

  • Technical Literacy: working knowledge of technical direction carpentry and set construction theater lighting design live audio flyrail and rigging Livestream broadcasts Zoom meetings.

  • Ability to translate complex technical needs to non-technical stakeholders (e.g. providing acoustic and lighting consultations for campus departments).
