Description
Position Summary: This position requires performing a variety of routine and/ or complex tests on clinical specimens.
Position responsibilities:
- Bacteriology: All Cultures are sent out to the reference laboratory.
- Chemistry: Performs routine and complex chemical testing as ordered by physician. Insures accuracy of work by instrument calibration method calibration reagents and techniques by use of known standards control sera and calibration.
- Hematology: Performs complete blood counts platelet counts ESR cell indices therapeutic phlebotomy. Runs controls to assure accuracy if testing. Performs daily and periodic maintenance on analyzer.
- Urinalysis: Examines urine macroscopically and microscopically for color appearance pH protein glucose ketone specific gravity and formed elements on the sediment. Microscopically examine wet preps.
- Validates and reports results of test performed in house as well as test that are sent to the Reference Laboratory.
- Calibrates standardizes and performs maintenance on instruments following established procedures.
- Performs quality control to ensure proper functioning of instruments reagents and procedures. Recognizes instrument malfunction and out- of- control test results and takes corrective action and documents problem.
- Prepares reagents standards and controls according to prescribed procedures.
- Evaluates all lab quality control documentation and identifies problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of test results and either must correct the problem and /or bring it to the attention of the laboratory supervisor.
- Confer with physicians and/or nurses on lab findings timing and availability of tests or procedures.
- Assures supplies are adequate for test being sent out to reference lab.
- Obtain specimens (Venipuncture) assure proper transportation and storage identification.
- Validates results by RPMS and file lab orders by month of service.
- Other duties as assigned.
Requirements
Essential skills and experience:
- Must have an Associates of Science Degree and must have graduated from an accredited school of Medical Technology which consists of 12 months of clinical education.
- Three to five years of experience preferred.
- Thorough knowledge in principles of Quality Control proficiency testing and standard medical technology concepts.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
- Proficient with handling and processing of pathogenic/infectious or communicable disease specimens.
Valued but not required skills and experience:
- Bachelors Degree or higher.
