Compensation and Benefits

Salary: $81288 - $86712 (Annual Gross) $41.69 - $44.47 per hour

Supplemental Pay Types:

o Salary premium for Welding ticket of $1.75 per hour

o Opportunity for OT at Double Time (bankable for additional time off)

o Evening/weekend shift premiums when applicable

Schedule:

o Working nine day-shifts (6:37am to 3:30pm) over a two-week period

Every second Friday or Monday off

Vacation Allotments:

o Year 1: 1.25 vacation days earned per month

o Year 2: Three weeks of vacation

o Year 5: Four weeks of vacation

o Year 8: Five weeks of vacation

o Year 14-18: One additional day of vacation earned per year

o Year 18: Six weeks of vacation

o Every year: Three additional vacation days between Christmas and New Years

University Pension Contributions:

o 9.4% of your gross pensionable earnings (basic salary).

Eligibility for Tuition Credit Waivers:

o 12 credits of UBC undergraduate courses (transferable to youreligible dependent spouse or child); or Continuing Studiesnon-credit courses (the dollar equivalent of 12 undergraduate credits) in each 12-month period

Job Description Summary

The Metal Worker performs skilled sheet metal work in the fabrication repair maintenance and renovation work of sheet metal fixtures for heating ventilation roofing windows doors and other related installations throughout the University.

Organizational Status

This position reports to the People & Process Manager Mech Systems & HVAC Trades. The Metal Worker receives direction from oral and written instructions work orders drawings specifications and lay out work which are assigned by the Head Sheet Metal Worker. This position works collaboratively with other Metal Workers as well as employees in various trade classifications within the department of UBC Building Operations.

Work Performed

Fabricates eave troughs down pipes metal windows metal frameworks metal clad doors counter tops windows fume hoods and other galvanized iron aluminum and stainless-steel fixtures for heating ventilation roofing windows doors and other related installations including handling of asbestos or other hazardous insulation materials

Conducts inspection tests on various machinery and equipment as it relates to sheet metal repair and maintenance; diagnoses defects and carries out repairs or recommends solutions to correct problems to supervisory staff.

Assembles parts and joins them by welding gauge steel soldering brazing bolting riveting screwing and other related methods.

Adheres to all safety standards practices procedures and ensures protective clothing is worn as required.

Communicates with customers as required to ensure the efficient delivery of service.

Responds to trouble calls and emergencies during normal working hours and after working hours.

Keeps current with preventative maintenance concepts technology and theory and maintains familiarity with manufacturer and regulatory maintenance requirements.
Carries out any other related duties as required in keeping with the qualifications and requirements of positions in this classification.

Consequence of Error/Judgement

Makes fabrication/repair decisions determining the sequence of work the work methods and equipment to be employed and decides how best to complete the work based on technical knowledge of the trade and related departmental guidelines and policies; inappropriate decisions may result in minor delays and costs.

Supervision Received

The Metal Worker works under the general supervision of the Head and Sub Head Metal Worker following directions from oral and written instructions work orders drawings and specifications and lay out work.

Supervision Given

Monitors and checks the work of apprentice(s) as the need arises.

Minimum Qualifications


- A trade certification to journeyperson level as a Sheet Metal Worker a valid BC drivers license and a minimum five years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing. Ability to analyze problems identify key information and issues and effectively resolve. Ability to work effectively with minimal supervision.
