The City of Oakland is currently recruiting to fill one (1) Food Program Monitor vacancy within the Human Services Department (HSD). The Human Services Department works to strengthen Oakland communities by ensuring access to essential services that support children youth and families. This position supports the Citys food programs which provide free meals to children and youth during periods when school is not in session. Food Program Monitors play a critical role in ensuring meals are delivered safely sites operate in compliance with City State and federal requirements and children have consistent equitable access to nutritious food.

This role is part of a small mission-driven team focused on operational excellence community partnership and public service. The work is fast-paced people-centered and directly impacts families across Oakland.This position is not eligible for remote work. Food Program Monitors work primarily in the field traveling between program sites across Oakland. Administrative tasks such as reporting and data entry may be completed at City facilities using City-issued equipment.

What you will typically be responsible for:
  • Visiting food program sites to observe meal service and ensure compliance with program requirements.
  • Verifying meal deliveries and confirming accurate meal counts with vendors and site staff.
  • Monitoring site operations and identifying issues related to food service access or safety.
  • Maintaining daily logs and completing required reports using mobile and computer-based systems.
  • Supporting site staff through training guidance and technical assistance as needed.
  • Communicating concerns or requested changes to City supervisors in a timely manner.
  • Traveling between sites by vehicle and assisting with meal pick-up or delivery when necessary.
  • Using City-issued technology and mobile applications to document monitoring activity.

Minimum Requirements for Application

This is a public contact position. The City highly encourages all bilingual candidates to apply! Some positions may require bilingual skills in Spanish Cantonese or Mandarin. Under the authority of Civil Service Rules Section 5.03 if a position requires bilingual language skills only those candidates who have indicated they are bilingual in the required language(s) will be referred. Bilingual candidates will be required to successfully pass a language proficiency test if selected for hire.

Any combination of experience and education that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities may be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:


Experience:
A minimum of one year experience paid or volunteer. Must have demonstrated interest working with children.

Education:
Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade.

License or Certificate / Other Requirements:
Possession of a California Drivers License.

Desirable Qualifications:
  • Experience working with children or youth in a school or community setting.
  • Prior experience with food programs meal service or site monitoring.
  • Experience operating a vehicle in urban environments and navigating multiple neighborhoods.
  • Experience using mobile data collection tools or compliance apps.
  • Multilingual skills relevant to Oakland communities.

Supplemental Information

This is an at-will position exempt from the provisions of the City of Oakland Civil Service Rules per Charter Section applications received will be forwarded to the Human Services Department for further consideration.

Meeting the minimum qualification requirements may not result in further consideration only the most qualified candidates will be contacted for interviews.
