The successful candidate will join a growing research program focused on understanding how mosquitoes use their sensory systems to drive behaviors relevant to disease transmission with the long-term goal of developing innovative strategies to reduce mosquito-borne diseases.

Half of the worlds population is at risk for mosquito-borne diseases and mosquitoes rely heavily on their sensory systems to locate hosts mates egg-laying sites and sugar sources. The Raji Lab exploits this dependence to uncover the genetic neural and molecular mechanisms underlying mosquito behavior particularly in Anophelesdisease vectors.

The laboratorys research program aims to develop new genetic tools to study the neurobiology of mosquito behavior and identify genes and neural circuits that drive blood-feeding and other appetitive behaviors in malaria mosquitoes. To achieve these goals the lab uses CRISPR-Cas9 gene editing transcriptomics neurophysiology neuroanatomy RNA in situ hybridization functional imaging and behavioral assays.
