Job Goal:
The Social Studies / Civics Training Specialist will coordinate develop and deliver professional learning and technical assistance for the TEA Civics Training Program in Region 6. This position supports K12 educators and administrators in implementing high-quality civics instruction aligned with TEA program requirements. The specialist will design and facilitate training that strengthens civic knowledge democratic understanding media literacy and instructional practices across content areas.
Qualifications:
Education / Certification
Bachelors degree from an accredited college or university
Valid Texas teaching certificate
Experience
Minimum of five (5) years successful experience in K12 social studies instruction and/or instructional leadership
Experience delivering professional development to adult learners
Preferred
Masters degree in Education or related field
Experience working in an Education Service Center or district-level curriculum role
Knowledge of civics education media literacy and constitutional studies
Experience with grant-funded programs and compliance requirements
Knowledge Skills and Abilities:
- Strong knowledge of Texas Social Studies TEKS and civics-related statutory requirements
- Ability to facilitate guided discussions of current events in a developmentally appropriate and compliant manner
- Expertise in instructional design and professional learning facilitation
- Strong communication collaboration and organizational skills
- Ability to analyze district and regional needs and provide targeted instructional support
- Proficiency with instructional technology and virtual learning platforms
Major Responsibilities and Duties:
Program Implementation
Plan develop and deliver Civics Training Program sessions aligned to TEA requirements including:
Civic knowledge within the Social Studies TEKS
Classroom simulations and models of democratic and governmental processes
Guided classroom discussions of current events
Media literacy skills including evaluating sources identifying propaganda and logical fallacies
Strategies for integrating civics instruction into non-social studies content areas Civics Guidelines
Professional Learning & Technical Assistance
Facilitate high-quality professional learning for teachers administrators and instructional leaders
Provide follow-up support coaching and consultation to districts and campuses
Support implementation of effective instructional practices that promote civic understanding and informed patriotism
Planning & Collaboration
Collaborate with ESC leadership to develop and implement a regional plan for civics training and support
Coordinate training schedules materials and outreach efforts across the region
Collaborate with TEA other ESCs and district partners to support statewide civics initiatives Civics Guidelines
Compliance & Documentation
Maintain accurate documentation including attendance records recruitment efforts training materials and correspondence
Support compliance with TEA grant requirements allowable activities and performance measures
Assist with data collection and reporting required for grant monitoring and evaluation Civics Guidelines
Equipment Used:Standard office equipment including personal computers and peripherals
Work Conditions:
- Frequent regional travel required
- Occasional evening or weekend work for training sessions
- Grant-funded position through August 31 2027 contingent upon funding
- Posture: Prolonged sitting; occasional bending/stooping pushing/pulling and twisting
- Motion: Repetitive hand motions including frequent keyboarding and use of a mouse; occasional reaching
- Lifting: Occasional light lifting and carrying (less than 15 pounds).
- Environment: Self-discipline that will enable continuous learning be able tomulti-task with frequent interruptions and with minimal supervision andmaintain emotional control under stress. Prolonged and irregular work hours on occasion
- Mental Demands: Work with frequent interruptions; maintain emotional control under stress
