SUMMARY
The purpose of this job is to conduct workplace safety inspections and evaluations to identify potential safety hazards and ensure organizational compliance with local State and Federal regulations. Investigates potential safety hazards and safety related accidents and incidents. Documents and reports investigation findings. Performs safety trainings and communicates safety procedures to staff. The Safety Technician will primarily assist the Safety Supervisor with the day-to-day safety related operations. This position will work closely with Risk Management department and Solid Waste Services safety officers.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
- Conducts safety inspections and safety audits.
- Ensures personnel follow all personal safety precautions policies and procedures.
- Inspects and reviews working conditions for hazards and makes recommendations regarding safety measures.
- Collaborates with department leadership to develop new hire safety orientation safety meetings accident and injury prevention meetings and specialized equipment safety training programs.
- Trains employees to follow safety procedures and use equipment properly.
- Serves as mentor coaches and conducts safety ride-a-longs.
- Investigates work related accidents injuries and property damage. Reports findings to management and Safety Coordinator.
- Prepares and facilitates CDL (Commercial Drivers License) and other curriculum for employees looking to obtain permits and licenses.
- Collaborates with leadership to manage pre-hire testing.
- Performs daily safety announcements concerning safety hazards and the importance of safe behavior.
- Must be able to obtain NCDA&CS license within 1 year of employment
- Must obtain their tankers endorsement within a year
- Performs other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Required Education and Experience
- High school diploma (or GED equivalent)
- Three (3) years of related work experience performing safety inspections
- Any equivalent combination of training education and experience that provides the required skills knowledge and abilities
Required Licenses or Certifications
- OSHA 30
- Smith System certification
- Pesticide license/certification
- North Carolina Commercial Drivers license Class B (CDL)

SALARY
$24.00-$30.00 Per Hour
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
The Citys Background Check Policy requires background checks to be conducted on final internal or external candidate(s) applying for any position with the City of Charlotte. The type of information that will be collected as part of a background check includes but is not limited to: reference checks social security verification education verification criminal conviction record check and if applicable a credit history check sex offender registry and motor vehicle records check.
Background checks must be in compliance with all federal and state statutes such as the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA). The checks must be consistent with the guidelines set forth by these laws requiring organizations to obtain a candidates written authorization before obtaining a criminal background report motor vehicle records check or credit report; and to properly store and dispose of information derived from such reports.
Final candidates must pass a pre-employment drug-screening test and physical examination. During the selection process candidates may be asked to take a skills test and/or participate in other assessments.
