The Horticulture Forestry and Environmental Education (HFEE)Division is offering a summer internship opportunity for undergraduate students who are interested in forestry horticulture arboriculture environmental science or any related field. This is a paid internship running fromJune 1 2026 to August 6 2026. The working schedule will be Monday Thursday 7:00 AM 2:00 PM.

The HFEE Division maintains and protects the natural resources of Montgomery Parks. Our Urban Forestry unit manages a comprehensive tree care program that supports the long-term health of trees on parkland. This program ensures public safety by assessing tree risk through inventory and evaluation and mitigating risk through pruning and the removal of high-risk trees and limbs. This internship offers hands-on experience alongside highly skilled arborists and urban foresters working in an innovative data-driven urban forestry program.

Examples of Important Duties

What the internship will involve:

  • Tree Inventory Survivorship Study: Interns will become familiar with tree inventory data collection and analysis. They will learn how to accurately locate individual trees using an advanced GNSS system learn to assess the condition of young trees and gain experience in the field using TreeKeeper 8 Inventory Management Software.

  • Tree Identification: Interns will learn the techniques and procedures for identifying common landscape tree species in our parks. Using our tree inventory software students will verify and correct the tree species information for the 2025 survivorship study.

  • Tree Health Assessment: Interns will learn to identify common tree defects and conditions that may impact a trees long-term or short-term health.

  • Tree Risk Inspections: Interns will learn how to identify potential hazards from trees to park patrons or property. They will learn to use the International Society of Arboricultures Tree Risk Inspection procedure.

  • Young Tree Care: Interns will learn how to provide care for young trees through mulching watering and structure pruning using hand tools.

  • Data Analysis: Interns will learn how to analyze and present tree inventory data using GIS Microsoft Excel and PowerBi.

  • Urban Forestry Management: The intern will also learn about the different work programs implemented by our Urban Forestry section to gain an understanding of how the urban forests within Montgomery Parks are managed.

Minimum Qualifications

Preferred Qualifications

  • Applicant should be enrolled in a college program focusing on forestry horticulture arboriculture environmental science or a related field.
  • Applicants should have a passion for learning new and varied skills relevant to tree care operations and be capable of working on a team.
Minimum Qualifications
  1. Must be currently enrolled full-time at an accredited college university or trade school.
  2. Must have at least a 2.5 GPA (on a 4.0 scale).
  3. College/University students must submit a college transcript. An unofficial transcript is acceptable

Working Conditions:

This position primarily works outside with some indoor work and will be required to perform physical tasks. They may also be exposed to weather including high temperature and high humidity dirt insects and wildlife. Work may involve walking and/or hiking over uneven terrain.
