BASIC FUNCTION:
The Mechanical Services Engineer provides engineering support for the design installation commissioning and operation of mechanical services systems including HVAC ventilation cooling water compressed air and building control systems. The position focuses primarily on supporting the ARIEL project and when required contributes to site-wide mechanical services under the guidance of senior engineers. The role involves translating defined requirements into sound engineering solutions and supporting portions of larger more complex projects.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Provide mechanical engineering support for projects of small to moderate scope under established engineering practices codes standards and applicable legislation.
Assist with conceptual and detailed design activities including preparation of calculations drawings and specifications under guidance from senior engineers.
Support procurement fabrication installation testing and commissioning of mechanical systems.
Translate user needs and defined requirements into preliminary engineering solutions and design inputs.
Assist with coordination of installation activities and verify work complies with approved designs specifications and TRIUMF procedures.
Support commissioning activities including execution and documentation of commissioning plans.
Maintain accurate engineering records and documentation for assigned work.
Assist with troubleshooting system issues and support safe restoration of systems under supervision.
Follow established design change management processes.
Participate in risk identification activities and escalate issues beyond scope to senior engineers.
Review technical documents such as drawings specifications and calculations for completeness and accuracy.
Participate in project and team meetings and contribute to progress updates and documentation.
Work collaboratively with engineers designers technicians contractors and vendors.
Conduct work in alignment with Group and Project objectives and established professional practices.
Take the initiative. Make suggestions to improve health and safety
SUPERVISION EXERCISED:
This position does not have formal supervisory responsibilities. The incumbent may provide informal technical assistance to students or junior staff as directed.
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:
Foundational knowledge of mechanical systems such as HVAC compressed air cooling water and building services.
Working knowledge of relevant safety regulations and engineering standards.
Ability to prepare and maintain technical documentation.
Sound analytical and problem-solving skills with guidance.
Ability to follow defined engineering procedures and practices.
Effective written and verbal communication skills in English.
Ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary team environment.
Experience or familiarity with 2D and/or 3D CAD tools.
Basic understanding of piping and instrumentation diagrams and mechanical drawings.
Skills considered an asset for this position:
Exposure to nuclear facilities or regulated environments.
Familiarity with building codes ASHRAE standards or ASME piping codes.
Experience supporting construction or commissioning activities.
NUCLEAR ENERGY WORKER:
The incumbent will be required to complete the TRIUMF in-house radiation safety training course and be designated as a TRIUMF Nuclear Energy Worker (NEW).
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND YEARS OF EXPERIENCE:
Bachelors degree in mechanical engineering or a related discipline.
Typically 24 years of relevant professional engineering experience or equivalent.
Registration as an Engineer in Training (EIT) in the province of British Columbia is preferred.
Applicants must be legally able to work in Canada on a permanent basis (Canadian Citizen or Permanent Resident).
