Summary
The Registered Nurse serves as the Falls Prevention Program Coordinator at the Orlando VA Medical Center in Lake Nona providing leadership coordination and oversight of an evidence-based falls prevention program to promote patient safety and reduce fall-related injuries.
The RN applies the nursing process clinical expertise and program management principles to assess plan implement and evaluate falls prevention strategies across the health care system. The incumbent collaborates with interdisciplinary teams nursing leadership and patient safety staff to improve quality outcomes ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and support a culture of safety.
Duties include but are not limited to:
- Applies the nursing process at the system service and unit level to improve fall prevention practices and patient safety outcomes.
- Coordinates develops and evaluates an evidence-based Falls Prevention Program aligned with VA policies national standards and best practices.
- Serves as a clinical and programmatic resource to nursing staff leadership and interdisciplinary teams on fall prevention strategies and interventions.
- Analyzes falls data identifies trends and recommends improvements to reduce fall and injury risk.
- Develops implements and maintains facility falls prevention policies clinical guidelines and education programs for staff patients and caregivers.
- Participates in or leads Fall Root Cause Analyses (RCAs) and collaborates with Patient Safety Managers to address identified risks.
- Prepares required reports benchmarks and annual falls program aggregates for leadership review.
- Participates in quality improvement activities that support safe effective and veteran-centered care.

Conditions of employment

Qualifications
Basic Requirements:
- English Language Proficiency. In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7403(f) no person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English.
- Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE); OR Individuals attending a masters level bridge program in nursing who have completed coursework equivalent to a bachelors level degree in Nursing may have opportunity to become registered as a nurse with a state licensing board prior to completion of the bridge program. Upon achievement of a State license the individual may be appointed on temporary basis and later converted to a permanent appointment upon successful completion and graduation from the bridge program. (Reference VA Handbook 5005 Appendix G6); OR In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing possession of a current full active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement for graduation from an approved school of professional nursing to warrant an appointment as a Nurse who has completed an associated degree/entry level Nursing education program. Credit for foreign nursing education higher that associate degree/entry level requires a formal degree equivalency validation from a recognized equivalency evaluation accepted by VA such as International Consultants of Delaware (ICD).
- Current full active and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State Territory or Commonwealth (i.e. Puerto Rico) of the United States or the District of Columbia. Graduate Nurse Technician (GNT) Exception: Candidates who otherwise meet the basic education requirements but do not possess the required licensure may be appointed at the entry step of the grade and level applicable to the completed nursing education as a GNT on a 120-day temporary appointment while actively pursuing licensure (may be extended up to two years on a case-by-case-basis.)
Grade Determinations: The following Scope Education and Dimension criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates and if appropriate the level within a grade. Reference: For more information on this qualification standard please visit Requirements: The position requires flexibility in schedule and assignments and the physical ability to perform duties involving prolonged walking standing sitting bending kneeling pushing and pulling. The incumbent must possess adequate visual acuity hearing clear speech and manual dexterity to safely perform clinical and programmatic responsibilities. Duties may include transferring patients or equipment and working in environments with potential exposure to infectious patients contaminated materials or combative individuals due to medical or psychiatric conditions. Use of personal protective equipment and adherence to safe patient handling and mobility protocols are required. The incumbent must be able to work effectively in stressful situations adjust priorities based on patient needs and meet physical demands consistent with assigned service responsibilities
Specialized Preferred Qualifications:
- Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) preferred
- Prior experience in Program Management or as a Program Coordinator
- Relevant certifications for this position
- Lean Six Sigma Certified preferred
