We are currently seeking a Teaching Intern High Performance Support who will collaborate with the High Performance Coordinator the Director of the Wernham West Centre for Learning and Student Services and the Director of Academics to provide individualized and group Math and Science support to students in the High Performance Program. This role is designed to support the unique demands of high-performance student schedules. As such work hours require a degree of flexibility. The successful candidate should be available for varied start times which may include before-school or after-school sessions to ensure consistent academic support.

The UCC Teacher Intern supports the delivery of UCCs missions and vision of providing transformational learning experiences for students. The program expands UCCs talent pipeline by attracting promising early career teachers and providing exceptional development opportunities.

Key Responsibilities and Tasks

Academic Support and Accommodations:

  • Support the High Performance Coordinator in developing and implementing specialized Math and Science programming for High Performance students;

  • Support the Centre for Learning in implementing specialized programming for students;

  • Collaborate with the Math and Science Faculty Chairs and classroom teachers to provide academic assistance to students where necessary;

  • Potential to teach and/or co-teach a course (eg. General Learning Strategies and/or Personal and Fitness Activities) under the guidance of the Director.

Student Support and Engagement:

  • Support the various programs and services offered by the school;

  • Collaborate with various constituents to build supportive relationships encourage self-advocacy and foster students sense of agency.

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Provide internal coverage of classes as required;

  • Potential to travel with teams such as Hockey and Rowing in an academic support capacity.

Job Requirements

Experience Knowledge and Competencies:

  • Completion of a bachelors degree in education or a related field;

  • Teaching certificate issued by the Ontario College of Teachers (OCT) or enrollment in a recognized teacher education program required;

  • Previous experience working in a classroom setting or educational environment is desirable but not always required;

  • Experience in providing academic support for math and science and implementing accommodations is beneficial;

  • A solid background and understanding of physics is an asset;

  • Understanding of inclusive education practices and accommodations for students with diverse needs;

  • Familiarity with the Ontario curriculum and subject-specific knowledge particularly in science and math;

  • Knowledge of executive functioning skills and strategies to support students organization and self-regulation;

  • Strong interpersonal skills to collaborate with the High Performance Coordinator classroom teachers and students;

  • Effective communication skills to provide academic support and accommodations to students;

  • High emotional intelligence and empathy to support students navigating the unique pressures of high-performance environments;

  • Ability to effectively assist in the implementation of learning strategies and accommodations within the High Performance Program;

  • Understanding of administrative processes related to implementing interventions and monitoring student progress.
