Summary
This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP) a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program Approval award amount (up to $200000) & eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after review of the EDRP application. Former EDRP participants ineligible to apply.
The Behavioral Health Interdisciplinary Program (BHIP) Registered Nurse serves as an essential member of an integrated mental health care team designed to provide holistic patient-centered care for individuals with behavioral health conditions. The RN functions collaboratively within an interdisciplinary team that may include psychiatrists psychologists social workers nurse practitioners and other healthcare professionals. The RNs role focuses on care coordination clinical support patient education and crisis management ensuring continuity and quality of behavioral health care.
Duties and responsibilities of the BHIP RN include:
- Serves as the primary point of contact for patients within the BHIP team.
- Coordinates and tracks care across multiple providers and settings ensuring timely follow-up and continuity.
- Monitors patient progress toward treatment goals and communicates updates to the interdisciplinary team.
- Assists with transitions of care (e.g. inpatient to outpatient or between programs).
- Conducts nursing assessments including mental health medical and psychosocial components.
- Identifies early signs of crisis decompensation or risk of harm to self/others and intervenes appropriately.
- Performs medication reconciliation monitors side effects and ensures adherence to treatment plans.
- Provides input for diagnostic and treatment planning.
- Educates patients and families about mental health conditions medication management and wellness strategies.
- Promotes self-management coping skills and adherence to individualized treatment plans.
- Supports recovery-oriented care and shared decision-making.
- Responds to behavioral health emergencies and coordinates crisis stabilization efforts.
- Uses de-escalation and trauma-informed care techniques.
- Collaborates with emergency inpatient and community resources as needed.
- Participates actively in interdisciplinary case conferences treatment planning and team huddles.
- Maintains effective communication and documentation within the electronic health record (EHR).
- Provides clinical consultation and support to other team members regarding patient care.
- Participates in quality assurance and performance improvement activities.
- Ensures adherence to ethical and regulatory standards (HIPAA Joint Commission VA etc.).
- Engages in evidence-based practice and ongoing professional development.
- Other duties as assigned.
Pay: Competitive salary regular salary increases potential for performance awards

Conditions of employment

Qualifications
Basic Requirements:
- English Language Proficiency. In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7403(f) no person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English.
- Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE); OR Individuals attending a masters level bridge program in nursing who have completed coursework equivalent to a bachelors level degree in Nursing may have opportunity to become registered as a nurse with a state licensing board prior to completion of the bridge program. Upon achievement of a State license the individual may be appointed on temporary basis and later converted to a permanent appointment upon successful completion and graduation from the bridge program. (Reference VA Handbook 5005 Appendix G6); OR In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing possession of a current full active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement for graduation from an approved school of professional nursing to warrant an appointment as a Nurse who has completed an associated degree/entry level Nursing education program. Credit for foreign nursing education higher that associate degree/entry level requires a formal degree equivalency validation from a recognized equivalency evaluation accepted by VA such as International Consultants of Delaware (ICD).
- Current full active and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State Territory or Commonwealth (i.e. Puerto Rico) of the United States or the District of Columbia. Graduate Nurse Technician (GNT) Exception: Candidates who otherwise meet the basic education requirements but do not possess the required licensure may be appointed at the entry step of the grade and level applicable to the completed nursing education as a GNT on a 120-day temporary appointment while actively pursuing licensure (may be extended up to two years on a case-by-case-basis.)
Grade Determinations: The following Scope Education and Dimension criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates and if appropriate the level within a grade. Preferred Experience: Mental health nursing experience including provision of care coordination needs assessment chart reviews care or case management and communication within and across care lines to facilitate continuity of care for Veterans.

The position requires potentially long periods of combined walking standing stooping sitting bending pulling and pushing. The incumbent must be a mature flexible sensible individual capable or working effectively in stressful situation able to shift priorities based on needs of the organization. The incumbent may be required to travel occasionally. This position potentially requires flexibility in schedule and assignments.
