Job Summary
Summary
The Lead MSA is responsible for the training and coordination of Advanced MSA assignments and workflow found in an interdisciplinary unit. He/she is responsible for daily workload assessments providing staffing coverage and determining training needs of MSAs. This position is an indirect patient care position and primarily consists of appointment scheduling and preauthorizing payment of health care. Extensive knowledge of medical terminology and exceptional customer service are critical.

Qualifications
Basic Requirements:
- United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
- Experience: Six months experience of clerical office customer service or other administrative work that indicates the ability to acquire the particular knowledge and skills needed to perform the duties of the position OR
- Education. One year above high school (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED) OR
- Experience/Education Combination: Equivalent combination of experience and education (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED) are qualifying for entry level for which both education and experience are acceptable.
- English Language Proficiency. MSAs must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with VA Handbook 5005 Part II Chapter 3 Section A paragraph 3.j.
Grade Determinations: GS 07In addition to the basic requirements for employment listed above candidates must demonstrate the following Knowledge Skills and Abilities (KSAs)a. Experience. One year of experience/knowledge skills and abilities (KSA) equivalent to the GS-6 grade level.
GS 6 KSAs:
- Advanced knowledge of medical terminology and a wide range of clinical flow processes relating to access to care across multiple clinics specialties and/or community resources.
- Ability to utilize numerous advanced patient systems in support of multiple clinics in an interdisciplinary setting.
- Ability to organize work set priorities and delegate tasks/responsibilities in order to meet deadlines.
- Skill in communicating with individuals to obtain the desired effect and coordinating with a variety of interdisciplinary care team staff.
- Ability to provide staff development and training.
- Ability to manage staffing requirements manage workflow priorities and adjust the flow of work to meet team and patient needs. This includes the ability to follow-up on pending issues and demonstrate an understanding of the impact of incomplete work across multiple clinics.

Physical Requirements: The Lead MSA position is primarily sedentary and requires prolonged sitting and typing. The position requires visual acuity keen hearing clear distinctive speech and manual dexterity. This position requires potentially long periods of continued sitting and lifting of at least 35 pounds on an occasional basis. Staff may rarely be exposed to Veterans who are combative secondary to delirium dementia or psychiatric disorders while in patient care areas.

Receiving Service Credit for Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee.
