Job Description
The natural resources technician assists the natural resources specialist with the implementation and enforcement of the citys natural resources ordinances. This position will work with permit applicants to ensure their plans properly protect vegetation soil and water resources. Weekly tasks will include a mix of office and field related work. This is a great opportunity to see how local natural resources regulations are applied to protect the natural world for the betterment of a community.
This seasonal position is eligible for a $1.00 / $1.50 per hour bonus program. Bonus amounts are based on the number of hours worked and other criteria while in the seasonal role. Full bonus eligibility details will be provided to all finalists.
Duties/Responsibilities
- Assist with inspecting construction sites for compliance with the citys grading erosion control tree protection wetland protection and shoreland protection requirements
- Assist with reviewing building and grading permit applications and connecting with applicants regarding natural resource requirements
- Contacting contractors and residents regarding non-compliant items
- Assisting in tracking of building and grading permits through the application process
- Conducting miscellaneous inspections as requested
- Assist forestry and restoration staff on field projects as needed
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
- Must be at least 18 years of age
- Must pass the the U of Ms Erosion and Stormwater Management EI 1001 Exam within 3 weeks of employment
- Possesses a valid drivers license
Desired Qualifications:
- Education in natural resources or a similar field
- Ability to identify most Minnesota trees
- Familiarity with the Wetland Conservation Act
Additional Information
Ability to:
- Provide excellent customer service to residents and area businesses
- Take accurate field notes use maps and work independently
- Learn pertinent city policies and regulations
- Maneuver difficult terrain on foot if necessary
- Work outdoors in a variety of weather conditions
- Handle multiple projects simultaneously
- Work productively efficiently and safely
