Onsite (DOH Duty Station):This is a full-time onsite position located at our DOH facility in Tumwater WA.


Protecting and Improving the Health of All Washingtonians

This position serves as an entry level professional promoting and assisting with health licensing a public health program closely linked to the Departments mission by performing credentialing activities including evaluation of applicant ability to qualify as health care practitioners facilities and/or emergency medical providers which tie directly to improving patient safety and fostering access to health care in Washington important priorities for the Department of Health and Washington State.


As part of a high performance team the Credentialing Specialist(HSC 1) performs Health Professions Emergency Medical Services (EMS) and Facilities background check and criminal history and previous administrative licensing action review credentialing functions to promote and assist with the evaluation of compliance with public health programs and licensing standards.


What Youll Do

  • Review evaluate and assess incoming applications for completeness related to criminal history and previous administrative licensing actions and adherence to established departmental policy procedure state laws regulations and other credentialing requirements standards and practices.
  • Verify and obtain information about applicants/applications by searching on-line databases and other resources and by communicating with representatives of DOH programs state and local government agencies educational and credentialing/licensing institutions and other outside organizations.
  • Initiate or explain actions necessary for applications to achieve eligibility/compliance.
  • Provide written and verbal correspondence and outreach to internal and external customers. Provide application status updates to applicants.
  • Explain complex laws and regulations to inquiring providers interested parties and other government entities.
  • Provide consultation and education on health care professional and/or facilities background checks and review required for credentialing to providers customers interested parties and/or other external bodies including out of state and in-state verification of employment

Minimum Qualifications

There are multiple pathways to qualify for this position. You must meet one of the options provided and any additional criteria listed. Option 1: One or more years of experience in credentialing or licensing.


Option 2: Associate degree or higher education.


And the following experience.

  • Two or more years resolving customer inquiries problems or complaints in a high production environment.
  • Six or more months experience and an ability to use computer software as follows:
    • Word processing software such as Microsoft Word to create format edit preview print and save documents. Use standard functions to select edit copy paste format and spell check text.
    • Electronic communications and calendar programs such as Outlook to compose send and respond to electronic mail and coordinate schedules and schedule meetings.
    • Electronic database system to update and/or maintain records.
    • Accessing and searching Internet to find and download information.


After a conditional offer of employment a criminal history background check will be conducted. Information from the background check will not necessarily preclude employment but will be considered in determining the applicants suitability and competence to perform in the position.


Preferred Qualifications

  • A bachelors degree or higher.
  • One (1) or more years of analytical experience reviewing documents and taking appropriate action based on an analysis of the information.
  • Two or more years of credentialing or licensing experience.
  • Two or more years of demonstrated knowledge and understanding of commonly-used concepts practices and procedures within a particular field of DOH credentialing.


Working Conditions:

The following describes the working conditions of this position with or without reasonable accommodation.

  • This position is covered by a bargaining unit for which the Washington Federation of State Employees (WFSE) is the exclusive representative.
  • Exposure to hazards is limited to those commonly found in indoor office environments. May encounter potentially stressful situations and upset and/or frustrated customers.
  • Maintain a full-time schedule of 40 hours per week typically between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. (flexible schedules may be available).
  • Communicate effectively while working using tools such as Microsoft Teams Outlook and phone.
  • Adjust work hours as needed to meet business demands including occasional evenings or weekends.
  • Perform job duties in person at the designated DOH worksite.
  • Travel occasionally to attend training sessions.
  • Legally drive a vehicle or arrange alternative transportation for state business purposes.
  • Participate in emergency response activities and complete high-priority assignments during emergency events as assigned.
