Founded in 1998 by three chefs Second Helpings remains true to its core mission while the ability to serve our community has continued to 2025 we rescued 4.9 million pounds of food and distributed over 2.3 million meals through our 200 area partners.

The Second Helpings building is a vibrant and active one fostering a collaborative work environment. The organization relies on a steady and dedicated volunteer corps. Lunch is available daily.

Job Summary:

The Dish Room Steward supports the Hunger Relief Department by overseeing dish room activities including training others and maintaining cleanliness and sanitation in the building.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Ensure the dish room and mop room (including floors and drains) are clean well-maintained and organized.
  • Adhere to all sanitation guidelines set by Federal State Local health departments and Second Helpings.
  • Train temporary workers and volunteers on dish room procedures equipment operation setup breakdown and best practices.
  • Ensure dish room setup and breakdown meet cleanliness and equipment guidelines.
  • Collect and dispose of trash recycling and compost maintaining cleanliness in these areas.
  • Perform general cleaning tasks such as sweeping mopping washing and emptying rubbish bins ensuring proper waste placement in pertinent areas dish and mop rooms laundry recycling area and breakroom if needed.
  • Clean and sanitize pots pans utensils service ware and other kitchen equipment.
  • Clean floors and walls in the kitchen and dishwashing area according to schedule.
  • Ensure dish room and mop room equipment are clean and in good working order and report needs to the Facilities Manager and Manager of Hunger Relief.
  • Ensure all hand sinks in the kitchen dish room and restrooms are stocked with soap and paper towels daily. Ensure that mops are clean and stocked in the mop room daily.
  • Monitor chemicals inventory for the dish room and mop room inventory related supplies and dish and service ware cooking utensils and report needs to the Facilities Manager and Manager of Hunger Relief.
  • Report maintenance or hazard issues to the Manager of Hunger Relief or Facilities Manager.
  • Maintain ServSafe Food Handler certification.
  • Assist with routine cleaning and maintenance of the Hunger Relief Kitchen storage areas equipment volunteer break room and Second Helpings grounds as needed.
  • Provide assistance in other areas as requested and when time permits.
Requirements

Education and Experience:

  • Ability to learn the operation of industrial dishwashers.
  • Experience in training others is a plus.
  • Must have or able to complete ServSafe Food Handlers certification within 60 days of hire.

Physical Demands and Work Environment: Regularly required to stand walk use hands reach talk hear and smell. Must be able to lift/move up to 50 pounds and maintain a brisk pace. Frequently exposed to wet/humid conditions and extreme heat; occasionally exposed to fumes airborne particles mechanical parts and electric shock risks. Noise levels range from moderate to loud.

This is a full-time hourly position with compensation of $20.00/hour. Hours may include evening (until 8:00 PM) or Saturday (7:30 AM 12:00 PM) shifts. Second Helpings is unable to sponsor or take over sponsorship of an employment visa at this time. Please note that if hired you will be asked to produce documentation authorizing work in the United States.
