Job Summary

The NYC Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) enriches the environment and protects public health for all New Yorkers by providing 1.1 billion gallons of high quality drinking water managing wastewater and stormwater and reducing air noise and hazardous materials pollution. DEP is the largest combined municipal water and wastewater utility in the country with nearly 6000 employees. DEPs water supply system is comprised of 19 reservoirs and 3 controlled lakes throughout the systems 2000 square mile watershed that extends 125 miles north and west of the City.

The Bureau of Water Supply seeks to hire a Mechanical Engineering Intern within the Drinking Water Operations South Division located in Valhalla New York. Under direct supervision of the Engineering Supervisor the Mechanical Engineer will provide vital support for the mechanical engineering portions or aspects of the operation and maintenance of facilities and various equipment under the directorate. They will perform electrical engineering work of moderate difficulty and responsibility. Specific duties include:

- Being part of a small unit or group engaged in the performance of design construction supervision service contract supervision inspection testing or computer aided design drawing.

- Engaging in research investigations studies or examinations related to the engineering functions or operational activities of the division.

- Engaging in the review and preparation of regulatory treatment reports and quality assurance checks of treatment plant data.

- Preparing designs plans contract and work drawings service contract specifications service contract scopes of work estimates of quantities contract payment requisitions and related contract correspondence.

- Participating in or supervising the inspection operations of the installation servicing and maintenance of electrically related materials and equipment by service contractors or in-house forces.

- Participating in or supervising the inspection of premises and the construction demolition or alteration of structures in connection with the issuance of certificates of occupancy or other requisite or pertinent permits and compliance with the provisions of law rule and regulation.

- Participating in or supervising the maintenance and development of equipment and facility assets in the divisions computerized maintenance and management system.

Medical Requirement

For certain positions you may be required to wear a respirator while performing the essential functions of this position. The selected candidate must be physically able to wear a respirator and must not have any condition that would prevent a good face seal when wearing a respirator. OSHA regulations have established medical guidelines for wearing a respirator. Therefore the candidate will be required to have pre-employment and periodic post-appointment medical examinations to demonstrate that they meet applicable OSHA standards and to monitor medical status. Once hired employees must continue to satisfy OSHA regulations for the duration of their employment.


License Requirement

At the time of appointment candidates must possess a Motor Vehicle Driver License valid in the State of New York. Employees must maintain this license for the duration of employment.

Some of the physical activities performed by Mechanical Engineering Interns and environmental conditions experienced are: walking to and from inspection sites; climbing and descending from ladders or stairs to get to areas to be inspected; standing for an extended period of time; bending and stooping during inspections; working in confined areas; distinguishing colors; wearing hard hat gas mask and goggles for inspections; communicating orally; carrying a laptop/tablet clipboard and inspection forms; climbing around and over various objects; walking in areas that may be damp dark smoky or acrid; working outdoors in all kinds of weather.

Special Working Conditions: Mechanical Engineer Interns may be required to work shifts including nights Saturdays Sundays and holidays.

Preferred Skills:

- Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite including Word Excel Outlook and PowerPoint

- Ability to use computerized maintenance management system (CMMS) software

- Ability to anticipate possible problems and develop contingency plans in advance

- Ability to anticipate the consequences of situation and plan accordingly

- Ability to work independently

Qualifications :

1. A baccalaureate degree in mechanical engineering aerospace engineering or mechatronics from an accredited college or university; or

2. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college in mechanical engineering technology and two years of full-time satisfactory experience in mechanical engineering work.
