Job Summary

Summary

The primary purpose of this position is to repair defective electrical wiring controls equipment and fixtures in visitor centers offices ranger stations museums collection storage facilities hotels restaurants maintenance facilities public buildings employee housing areas residences restrooms campgrounds ships boats trains garages and/or shops. The incumbent is required to adhere to all applicable electrical safety codes and standards.


Duties

The successful candidate for this position will perform the following duties:

  • Repairs defective electrical wiring controls equipment and fixtures
  • Adheres to all applicable electrical safety codes and standards
  • Removes replaces tightens splices solders and insulates defective wiring controls equipment and fixtures.
  • Maintains electrical wiring and associated fixtures controls and equipment
  • Follows all standard safety procedures wearing all applicable Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) associated with the job.
Cut-off Dates: This is an open continuous announcement in which applications are collected over several months and have multiple cut-off dates. Applications will be considered throughout the open period of the announcement. **INITIAL CUT OFF IS Monday January 5 2026**. Additional referral certificates will be issued when a hiring official exhausts current certificate and/or additional vacancies need to be filled.

    • Direct Deposit: Selectee will be required to participate in the Direct Deposit Electronics Funds Transfer Program.
    • Incidental Driving: You may be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties. Prior to your first official motor vehicle operation and again every year thereafter (or more frequently if management determines such need exists) you will be required to sign an affidavit certifying to your possession of a valid State issued drivers license that is current and has not been revoked suspended canceled or otherwise disqualified in any way to prohibit your operation of a motor vehicle. You will also submit a photocopy of your valid State issued drivers license prior to your first official motor vehicle operation and again every year or more frequently if management determines such need exists. Lastly you may be required to submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities) and at your own expense all certified driving records from all States that discloses all valid drivers licenses whether current or past possessed by you. Please indicate in your application whether you possess a valid State drivers license.
    • Uniform: You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided.
    • Government Housing: Housing is not available.
    • Minimum Age Requirement: Applicants must be at least (1)18 years old or (2) at least 16 years old and: (a) Have graduated from high school or been awarded a certificate equivalent to graduating from high school; or (b) Have completed a formal vocational training program; or (c) Have received a statement from school authorities agreeing with their preference for employment rather than continuing their education; or (d) Be currently enrolled in a secondary school and either work only during school vacation periods or work part-time during the school year under a formal student employment program.

    Qualifications

    To qualify for this position you must have sufficient knowledge and ability in the following job-related factors:

    SCREENOUT: Have experience with close supervision performing the duties which includes performing journeyman level electrical work including a wide range of commercial industrial residential and new construction services and repair; repairing and replacing broken worn damaged or poorly operating wiring fixtures controls and equipment; using test instruments such as ammeters meggers and test lamps; trouble shooting and repairing difficult electrical problems such as intermittent open or shorted circuits; applying a knowledge of electrical theory and a working knowledge of the National Electrical Code; reading interpreting and utilizing blueprints wiring diagrams sketches and drawings used in the electrical trade; using a variety of electrical equipment tools and test equipment; using formulas basic to the electrical trade; and using a variety of electrical equipment tools and test equipment.

    Education

    There is no substitution of education for experience for Wage Grade (WG) positions.

    Additional information

    This announcement may be used to fill additional positions if identical vacancies occur within 90 days of the issue date of the referral certificate.

    Non-Competitive Rehire Eligibility: Temporary seasonal employees can only maintain their non-competitive rehire eligibility if they work no more than a combined total of Temporary NTE less than 1040 hours anywhere in the National Park Service (NPS) within their established service year. Accordingly non-competitive rehire eligibility allows for re-appointment to the same position or another position appropriate for temporary appointment with the same qualification requirements (5 CFR 316.402b7) based on series and grade anywhere in the major subdivision (NPS).

    If you have held a temporary seasonal appointment in the past 12 months and have already worked the maximum temporary appointment less than 1040 hours during that period you are still welcome to apply. However please be aware that exceeding the limit of 1040 hours in your established service year will result in the loss of your non-competitive rehire eligibility.

    The limit can be exceeded by working multiple temporary seasonal positions that result in a combined total greater than 1040 hours. The limit also can be exceeded by working a single temporary seasonal appointment that exceeds 1040 hours unless granted an exception by OPM.

    Employment may be terminated at any time due to fluctuations in funding levels project needs employee performance or other considerations.

    Physical Demands: This position is required to perform electrical work from ladders scaffolds platforms and other cramped and hard-to-reach places. Duties require the incumbent to sit stand stoop bend kneel climb crawl and work in uncomfortable positions. The incumbent may be exposed to electrical shock spark and arc hazard and other health hazards. If the incumbent is assigned to perform electrical work in remote locations the incumbent may be required to walk hike or drive over rough and uneven terrain. The incumbent is expected to lift and/or carry items up to 50 pounds and occasionally exceeding 50 pounds in weight.

    Working Conditions: Work is both indoors and outdoors. Work outside may be subject to extreme weather conditions with wind rain snow and ice in temperatures ranging from below 0 to over 100 degrees. Depending on the geography of the park unit assigned work may take place at elevations ranging from sea level up to 10000 feet. The incumbent may be regularly exposed to dust fogs mists gases smokes sprays and vapors as well as noise vibration cuts and abrasions from the use of electrical tools and equipment and may occasionally be exposed to hazardous materials that can cause skin eye and respiratory irritation and burns as well as microbiological organisms and potentially hazardous wildlife. The incumbent is expected to comply with all safety and occupational health requirements and wear protective clothing gloves face shields and in some cases a respirator that may be uncomfortable.
