Job Summary

Summary

The Amarillo VA Health Care System is seeking a full-time Oncology/Infusion Registered Nurse for the VA Clinic in Lubbock Texas. The Outpatient Staff Registered Nurse will deliver knowledge based care to assigned clients per VA policies and guidelines.





Duties

The Registered Nurse demonstrates integration of biopsychosocial concepts cognitive skills and technically competent practice while providing care to clients Assesses plans implements and evaluates care based on age-specific components. Assumes responsibility for the coordination of care focused on patient education self-manage and customer satisfaction through the continuum of care. Administers medications and procedures per established policies and guidelines. Influences care outcomes by collaborating with members of the interdisciplinary include the following but not limited to:

  1. The RN works with interdisciplinary team members providing patient driven care to Veterans served by the Hematology/Oncology team and other specialty services as needed.
  2. Be chemotherapy certified and maintain certification while working in Chemo clinic.
  3. Has the ability to recognize abnormal vital signs notifies provider and documents accordingly to policy and procedure guidelines.
  4. Assist the provider gathering data chart reviews and documents appropriately.
  5. Assist the Hematology/Oncology provider with the Veteran physical exam or procedure as needed.
  6. Effectively sets up for CVT clinics as needed (ensuring connectivity and Meeting Number and the Host number are accurate).
  7. If required ensures a consent is present in the chart before proceeding with infusion.
  8. Adhere to Chemotherapy/infusion administration directives and responsibilities thereof and able to locate unit specific procedures.
  9. Communicates with patients completing their needs via secure messaging and completing pending patients on the Message Manager software within required timeframe.
  10. Communicates with outside facilities to acquire treatment related information as need.
  11. Manage required screenings and complete required clinical reminders documentation scheduling and address opening and closing the encounters.
  12. Provide Veteran education documentation and assistance with workload capture required for completion of the visit per scope of practice.
  13. Ensures a safe environment identifies health/safety risk and takes appropriate and immediate steps to alleviate the risk.
  14. Ability to locate and abide by the MCPs/MCMs policies and standard of processes to foster a High Reliability Organization.
  15. Attends National VISN or local meetings/training as required.
  16. Actively communicates with others about how planned changes may affect their work patients and their team.
  17. Participates in daily unit team huddles.
  18. Maintains flexibility when managing multiple projects roles and responsibilities simultaneously prioritizing as needed.
  19. Respects and deals effectively with change in the workplace and clinic assignments.
  20. Fosters flexibility through cross-training and developmental work assignments.
  21. Adapts to different specialty clinics and individual needs while providing care to patients.
  22. Encourages an environment of positivity does not engage in negative comments and does promote negative attitudes in the workspace.
  23. Invites contact and is easy to approach.
  24. Encourages shared decision-making.
  25. Must be competent in accessing and maintaining port-a-caths and peripherally inserted central catheters (PICC lines) and place and maintaining IVs.
  26. Experience with patient and family education in relation to patients diagnosis and expected side effects of treatment.
  27. Experience triaging patient phone calls.
Work Schedule: Monday - Friday (8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.)

    Qualifications

    Basic Requirements:

    Preferred Experience:
    • BSN preferred.
    • Minimum of 1 year experience required in Chemo-Infusion.
    • Must be ACLS certified.
    • Must be OCN or ONS/ONCC Chemo certified.
    • Experience providing high risk IV infusions such as chemotherapy blood and blood products and other non-chem infusions.
    NOTE: Grandfathering Provision - All persons currently employed in VHA in 0610 series and performing the duties as described in the qualification standard on the effective date of the standard (1/29/2024) are considered to have met all qualification requirements for the grade held including positive education and licensure/certification.

    Grade Determinations: The following Scope Education and Dimension criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates and if appropriate the level within a grade. The Dimension requirements (Practice Veteran/Patient Driven Care Leadership Professional Development and Evidence-Based Practice/Research) are detailed for each grade and level within the online assessment: I Level IDelivers fundamental knowledge-based care to assigned clients while developing technical competencies.An Associate Degree (ADN) or Diploma in Nursing with no additional professional nursing required.Nurse I Level IIDemonstrates integration of biopsychosocial concepts cognitive skills and technically competent practice in providing care to clients with basic or complex.An ADN or Diploma in Nursing AND 1 year of specialized nursing experience equivalent to Nurse I Level 1 ;OR a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) with no additional professional nursing experience required.Nurse I Level IIIDemonstrates proficiency in practice based on conscious and deliberate planning. Self-directed in goal setting for managing complex client situations.An ADN or Diploma in Nursing AND 2 years of professional nursing experience in which one year is equivalent to Nurse I Level 2; OR a BSN and 1 year of professional nursing experience equivalent to the Nurse I Level 2; OR a Masters degree in nursing (MSN) and no additional professional nursing experience; OR a Masters degree in a *related field with a BSN and no additional professional nursing experience.Nurse IIDemonstrates leadership in delivering and improving holistic care through collaborative strategies with others.A BSN with 2 years of professional nursing equivalent to Nurse I Level 3; OR an MSN with one year of specialized nursing experience equivalent to Nurse I Level 3; OR a Masters degree in a *related field with a BSN and one year of specialized nursing experience equivalent to Nurse I Level 3; OR a Doctoral degree in Nursing with no professional nursing experience; OR a Doctoral degree in a *related field with a BSN with no additional professional nursing experience.Nurse IIIExecutes position responsibilities that demonstrate leadership experience and creative approaches to management of complex client care beyond the immediate practice setting.MSN and 2 years of specialized nursing experience one of which is equivalent to Nurse II and meets all dimension requirements for Nurse III; OR a Masters degree in *related field with BSN and two years of specialized nursing experience one of which is equivalent to Nurse II and meets all dimension requirements for Nurse III; OR a Doctoral degree in Nursing with and one year of specialized nursing experience equivalent to Nurse II and meets all dimension requirements for Nurse III; OR a Doctoral degree in a *related field with a BSN and one year of specialized nursing experience equivalent to Nurse II and meets all dimension requirements for Nurse III.*Note: Foreign education programs/degrees are not creditable as related degrees.

    The Associate Degree Nursing (ADN) Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing (BSN) or Master of Science degree in Nursing (MSN) must be fully accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or the Commission On Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). Verification of accreditation may be obtained from or your school has changed names or is no longer in existence you must provide this information in your application.
