About the position

Clinical Educators (CEs) perform the important function of providing professional services whilst supporting and supervising our students to develop their clinical skills and professional competencies. CEs are experienced clinicians with a deep understanding of their field and contemporary evidence-informed professional this role the focus for activities is onsite at Jacana School for Autism in Jacana but with some time spent at La Trobes Bundoora campus.

This position has been developed in partnership with Jacana School for Autism to provide a Speech Pathology service onsite specifically for enrolled students. Additionally the role is enhanced with an expectation to supervise Speech Pathology students that can provide additional capacity for service provision in the school. The person in this role will spend some time on the Bundoora campus to ensure professional currency and connection to the discipline.

Duties at this level will include:

  • Liaising with the Principal and senior staff at Jacana School for Autism to determine the optimum timing for service delivery of Speech Pathology in parallel with student placement opportunities.
  • Provide assessment and intervention for students presenting with difficulties in areas such as speech language literacy and swallowing (e.g. mealtime assessments) in a range of settings (individual group in and outside of school contexts)
  • Provide multidisciplinary care through collaboration with other health services providing on site services at Jacana School for Autism.
  • Facilitating staff and parent education sessions to support children with communication needs
  • Ensuring students clinical experiences are designed to enable students to demonstrate the attainment of clinical skills and professional competency in line with the learning outcomes of clinical placement subjects.
  • Assess student performance and provide students with constructive and timely feedback on their development and attainment of professional competency.
  • Role model the ethical standards and professional behaviours expected of a health care professional.
  • Undertake other duties and administrative functions commensurate with the classification and scope of the position as required by the Clinical Education Lead Speech Pathology Head of Clinical Education or Dean.

Skills and Experience

To be considered for this position you will have:

  • Speech Pathology degree and clinical and professional experience recognised by the University/profession as appropriate for the relevant discipline area.
  • Proven ability to provide evidence based assessment and intervention for children with communication and swallowing difficulties
  • Proven ability to provide effective clinical supervision of students including an ability to adapt teaching styles to meet diverse learning needs.
  • Demonstrated ability to be effective in teaching clinical skills in face-to-face and/or blended modes.
