Position Overview

The Illinois Department of Public Health is seeking a highly motivated individual to serve as an Environmental Health Specialist in our Division of Environmental Health. This Environmental Health Specialist position provides support and coordination in Division food safety programs and helps the Division respond program requests from our regulated entities.

  • Under direction of the Food Program Manager plans directs evaluates and coordinates activities of the Retail Food Program. Provides advanced technical and administrative direction and assistance regarding retail food standards and regulation maintains program tracking and record-keeping. Assists the Food Program Manager with completion of projects in relation to State food protection standards.
  • Participates in the training and auditing of State and local health department food protection personnel in the interpretation of the food regulations of the Illinois Department of Public Health.
  • Reviews information on suspected or confirmed foodborne illness outbreaks assures that information is given to local health departments to appropriately guide their environmental investigations.
  • Manages regulated food salvage and bottled water facility records.
  • Serves as liaison to staff from the Office of Disease Control the Division of Laboratories other State Agencies and local health departments to facilitate coordination of responses to suspected and confirmed foodborne illness.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Requires a minimum of a bachelors degree from an accredited university or college with at least 30 semester hours in the physical or biological sciences.
  • Requires three (3) years of professional experience in environmental health practice.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Two (2) years of experience in a regulatory licensing or certification program.
  • One (1) year of experience implementing program budgets.
  • One (1) year of experience coordinating grants or contracts.
  • Two (2) years of experience providing guidance and support (i.e. customer service) to the public regulated entities and/or stakeholder groups.
  • Two (2) years of experience conducting food safety training inspections or audits.
  • Working knowledge outbreak investigation and environmental sampling.

Conditions of Employment

  • Requires use of personal vehicle for extensive work-related travel within the State.
  • Requires possession of a current and valid drivers license.
  • Certain provisions of the revolving door restrictions contained in 5 ILCS 430/5-45 apply to this position. As a result the employee should be aware that if offered non-State employment during state employment or within one year immediately after ending State employment the employee shall prior to accepting any such non-State employment offer notify the Office of the Executive Inspector General for the Agencies of the Illinois Governor (OEIG) or may be subject to a fine.
