English as a Second Language (ESL) Teacher

Position Summary

At Ankeny Schools the English as a Second Language (ESL) Teacher plays a critical role in supporting multilingual learners and advancing equitable access to learning for all students. ESL Teachers design and deliver targeted English language instruction collaborate with classroom teachers to support English Learners in the general education setting and build strong relationships that help students develop academic language confidence and independence. This role offers the opportunity to work alongside a collaborative team of educators and administrators committed to inclusive student-centered practices and continuous improvement.

Qualifications

Experience:

  • Prior experience teaching English Learners at the secondary level preferred but not required
  • Experience collaborating with department or grade-level teams to support English Learners preferred

Education & Licensure:

  • Bachelors degree in a position-related area
  • Iowa State Teacher License

Endorsement:

  • K-12 English Language Learner - 104

Required Skills:

  • Strong knowledge of second language acquisition and evidence-based ESL instructional practices.
  • Ability to plan and deliver instruction that supports English language development across listening speaking reading and writing.
  • Ability to use assessment data to monitor language growth and guide instructional decisions.
  • Strong collaboration and communication skills to support students families and instructional teams.
  • Commitment to equity cultural responsiveness and continuous professional learning.

Essential Functions

Instructional Design & Delivery:

Provides targeted English language instruction aligned with district curriculum and standards. Designs lessons and learning experiences that address the linguistic and academic needs of English Learners and support progress toward language proficiency and academic success.

Collaboration & Coaching:

Provides consultative and coaching support to classroom teachers regarding effective strategies for meeting the needs of English Learners in the general education setting. Collaborates with instructional teams to ensure appropriate accommodations and instructional supports are implemented.

Student Learning & Assessment:

Uses a variety of assessment tools to monitor student language development and academic progress. Analyzes data to adjust instruction and support continuous improvement for English Learners.

Classroom Management & Learning Environment:

Maintains a positive safe and inclusive learning environment that supports language development student engagement and cultural responsiveness. Models professional and ethical behavior aligned with district and state standards.

Communication:

Maintains timely professional and transparent communication with students families colleagues and administrators regarding student progress language development and instructional support.

Professional Responsibilities & Development:

Engages in ongoing professional learning related to English language instruction and fulfills professional responsibilities established by the district.

Attendance & Reliability:

Demonstrates consistent and reliable attendance and punctuality in alignment with district expectations recognizing the importance of instructional continuity and consistency for student learning.

Other Functions

  • Participate in staff development training programs faculty meetings and special events as assigned.
  • Provide excellent customer service and assistance to all employees fostering a welcoming and approachable atmosphere.
  • Work efficiently and independently with minimal supervision.
  • Demonstrate respect and professionalism in all interactions with colleagues students and families.
  • Use positive and professional communication in all interactions.
  • Adhere to safety protocols and policies established by the Ankeny Community School District to ensure the safety of oneself and others.
  • Support District goals and objectives while adhering to all District policies contributing to the overall success of the school community.
  • Demonstrate regular and dependable attendance to ensure smooth District operations.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.



Working Environment

Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:

The usual and customary methods of performing the position functions require the following physical demands: lifting carrying pushing pulling climbing reaching driving standing and walking. Working conditions may include extreme temperatures and humidity. Hazards may include exposure to communicable diseases. This position requires one to maintain emotional control under stress.
