SUMMARY

Carpenters construct erect install maintain and repair structures made of wood wood substitutes light steel and other materials. They work for construction companies carpentry contractors facility maintenance departments businesses and various other institutions or they may be selfemployed.

KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSABILITIES

  • Read interpret and study blueprints drawings and sketches to determine technical specifications and calculate material requirements
  • Prepare layouts using measuring tools in accordance with building code requirements
  • Measure cut shape and assemble components made of wood wood substitutes light steel and other materials
  • Build foundations install floor beams lay subflooring and assemble prefabricated wall and roof components
  • Fit and install carpentry elements such as interior doors moldings shelving storage units wall coverings wooden staircases hardwood flooring and hardware
  • Construct partitions and perform interior finishing of buildings
  • Maintain repair and renovate wooden structures in factories mines hospitals industrial facilities and other establishments
  • Install builtin furnishings (such as countertops kitchen cabinets and bathroom vanities)
  • Prepare estimates for clients when required
  • Supervise apprentices and laborers when applicable

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

  • Basic geometric and mathematical knowledge is essential for designing and laying out structural components
  • Computer skills are increasingly required to work with software commonly used in the field

CERTIFICATIONS AND PROFESSIONAL ACCREDITATION

  • Valid CCQ Journeyperson Certificate for Carpenter-Joiner
