Job Summary

Definition

Under general supervision from a Building Maintenance Supervisor provides skilled Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) services for the maintenance and repair of primarily commercial HVAC units and related equipment in buildings and facilities within the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community. This job class is treated as FLSA Non-Exempt and considered a DRIVING position.

Examples of Tasks

Tasks:
1. Repairs installs troubleshoots overhauls maintains and services freezers water cooled condensers air conditioning systems ventilating systems and related equipment. Locates malfunctions; disassembles repairs replaces and/or adjusts thermostats pressure stats relay switches and other automatic controls devices. Installs and repairs compressors and related components. Services installs and repairs evaporators and condensers. Replaces electric motors belts and pulleys.

2. Safely operates electrical/power/manual tools and equipment including but not limited to: metal cutting shears vacuum pump recovery unit multimeter leak detector generators and other standard HVAC tools.

3. Measures cuts shapes lifts and fastens HVAC ductwork in the construction and maintenance of Community Commercial buildings SRPMIC HVAC infrastructure and single family housing. Works with galvanized iron angle iron registers and duct work and duct fittings.

4. Reads and follows work orders blueprints supervisors instructions technical manuals used in diagnosing and repairing HVAC systems; reads and interprets instructions specifications books manuals schematics to check compare and solve repair and installation problems.

5. Fastens and installs HVAC units and control systems in the construction and maintenance Community Commercial buildings SRPMIC HVAC infrastructure and single family housing. Makes changes or modifications in accordance with specifications and guidelines. Selects appropriate materials plans operations and completes activities as directed by supervisor.

6. Loads and unloads materials and equipment at job sites; drives to and from job site.

7. Able to configure and have working knowledge of Energy Management Systems.

8. Performs other related job duties as assigned to enhance and facilitate program operations.

Knowledge Skills Abilities and Other Characteristics:

  • Knowledge of current OSHA SMACNA and ASHRAE rules standards and regulations.
  • Knowledge of HVAC methods techniques materials tools and equipment.
  • Knowledge of HVAC principles concepts and practices including knowledge in reading and interpreting books manuals and schematics.
  • Knowledge of various gauges sizes and types of wire conduit couplings fittings relay boxes circuit breakers and other electrical devices and ability to arrange and install them in ways that insure proper and safe operation of systems circuits and equipment.
  • Knowledge of pressure-temperature characteristics for absorber systems in order to locate and repair faulty equipment swiftly and to reduce inoperative time to a minimum.
  • Knowledge of the principles and theories of air conditioning and refrigeration such as the refrigeration cycle heat transfer lows the use of refrigerant tables calculation of air flow and other areas as directed by supervisor.
  • Knowledge of various types of refrigerants and the ability to work with them.

  • Skill and accuracy in measuring cutting shaping lifting and fastening HVAC ductwork.
  • Skill and accuracy in fastening and installing HVAC units and control systems
  • Skill in safely operating electrical/power/manual tools and a wide variety of test equipment such as air flow meters and compressor tester welding brazing and soldering equipment.
  • Skill and experience with Energy Management Systems/Related Building Automated Control Systems and using the software.

  • Ability to plan lay out and complete the installation modification and repair of various systems equipment and controls such as the routing placement balance load continuity and proper and safe operation of circuits and controls to HVAC equipment wiring system in buildings.
  • Ability to read interpret and use diagrams and schematics flow charts and specifications related to HVAC equipment.
  • Ability to lift stand bend stoop and carry typical amounts of HVAC tools materials and equipment weighing 50 90 pounds and to otherwise physically perform and complete HVAC tasks.
  • Ability to work in dusty and weather-exposed situations.
  • Ability to follow oral or written instructions.

Minimum Qualifications


Education & Experience: Graduation from high school or GED and experience equivalent to three (3) years as a journey level HVAC technician; OR completion of a post high school program in the HVAC field may substitute for one year of the required experience. Must be Universal EPA Certified. Must have own general tools of the trade.

  • For enrolled Community members without a GED must obtain a GED. Requires participation in the HR GED Program and successful completion of the Arizona state certified exam in order to continue employment with SRPMIC.

Equivalency: Any equivalent combination of experience and education that will allow the applicant to satisfactorily perform the duties of the job may be considered when filling the position.

Special Requirements


  • Must possess and maintain a valid Arizona Drivers License.
  • Will be required to work on call and weekend hours.
  • Will be required to successfully complete a background check and pre-employment drug screening.
Prior to hire as an employee applicants will be subject to drug and alcohol testing. Will be required to pass a pre-employment background/fingerprint check.
