Position Summary

NRDC isseekingto hire a two-year senior fellow in our Climate & Energy team to help lead NRDCs domestic efforts to phase down the super-pollutants called hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) and support our international engagement under the Montreal Protocol in San Francisco New York or Washington D.C. The employee will develop deep knowledge of HFCs or refrigerant-related policies and programs in U.S. states and abroad the science and engineering behind key aspects of HFC replacement and will be able to flexibly address other issues related to other climate super pollutants like methane nitrous oxide and other fluorinated greenhouse gases. The employee will work cross-functionally with a top team of lawyers engineersanalystsand advocates to support policy development in these areas.

This is a limited term 2 year position.

Responsibilities

  • Provide technical and policyexpertiseto U.S. states developing and implementing HFC policies both regulatory and incentive-based programs
  • At the federal level support engagement with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency on regulatory actions to phase down the production and consumption of HFCs; reduce demand for HFCs in new equipment; and better manage HFCs from the existing installed base of HFC-using equipment
  • Support NRDCs engagement with the Montreal Protocol as it phases down HFCs and more
  • Work with industry leaders and trade groups to promote state and local adoption of safety standards and building codes that allow use of low and near-zero warming HFC alternatives
  • Work with NRDCs international partner organizations on analyses and publications
  • Assistin building out NRDCs work on methane nitrousoxideand other climate super pollutants
  • Work collaboratively with other NRDC teams to support cohesive and holistic policy approaches that integrate HFCs and other super pollutants into strategies for building decarbonization and more

Qualifications

  • B.S. degree in a science engineering or other quantitative field with interest in climate policy development analysis and advocacy. Ph.D. M.S. preferred
  • 7 or moreyears of experience related to development or implementation of climate policy in the United States; Strong preference for experience related to HFCs or other super pollutants
  • 7 or moreyearsof relevant experience developing anddemonstratingkey knowledge and skills:
    • Ability to analyze complex multi-dimensional problems and make actionable recommendations
    • Ability to review distill and summarize scientific and technical research for both technical and non-technical audiences
    • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and handle multiple work streams
  • Excellent verbal communication strong writing and confident presentation skills
  • Diplomacy and relationship-building skills to interact with peers in government other non-profits and the business community
  • Experience working on climate cleanenergyor clean air policies
  • Willingness to travel on occasion

NRDC operates under a hybrid work model. Employeesare required tocome to the office 8 days per month.
