A Living Donor Coordinator manages the entire living organ donation process acting as a crucial liaison between the donor recipient and a multidisciplinary medical team handling everything from initial donor screening education and psychosocial support to coordinating complex medical evaluations facilitating consent overseeing surgical prep and ensuring post-donation follow-up all while maintaining strict regulatory compliance and providing empathetic support to navigate the emotional complexities of donation.
Key Responsibilities: Donor Assessment and Education: Screens potential donors provides comprehensive education on transplantation coordinates extensive medical/psychosocial testing and helps manage the donors physical and emotional journey.
Team Collaboration: Works closely with surgeons nephrologists social workers dietitians and other specialists to develop and adjust care plans. Coordination: Manages all logistics including scheduling appointments lab work imaging facilitating consent and coordinating pre- and post-operative care for donors.
Support and Communication: Serves as the primary point of contact offering support reassurance and education to donors and families before during and after donation especially when delivering difficult news (e.g. donor unsuitability).
Documentation & Compliance: Ensures accurate timely documentation and adherence to strict federal (e.g. UNOS/OPTN CMS) and hospital regulations. Advocacy: Acts as an advocate for the donor ensuring their well-being rights and understanding throughout the process.
