At Seattle Public Utilities we are looking for a team member who has vast knowledge as well as understanding of emerging technologies to serve to maintain Drainage & Wastewater equipment and facilities. This position is responsible for maintaining Drainage & Wastewater equipment and facilities to ensure that SPU follows the EPA consent decree and NPDES permitting requirements. The scope of maintenance requires all pumping and controlling throughout the transmission network. This position provides a prospective candidate to have a lasting impact on large-scale projects uniquely assisting a Utility that is perpetually evolving.

Job Responsibilities

  • Install maintain troubleshoot diagnose and repair water wastewater Combines Sewer Overflow (CSO)and backflow prevention system mechanical equipment including all motor-driven pumps and motor operated valves throughout the transmission network.
  • Machine precision parts for pumps compressors and valves; manufacture custom-made shafts shaft sleeves wear rings packing glands bore and sleeve housing and repairs impellers using lathes milling machines grinders drill presses welders and cutting torches.
  • Conduct preventive maintenance and inspection activities on motor driven pumps compressors gates ventilation equipment pipes oilers and motor operated valves.
  • Installs maintains and repairs various facilities equipment and systems such as roof drainage overhead bridge cranes pipes and oilers.
  • Order parts and supplies utilizing system generated work orders.
  • Report and document daily activities maintenance and repairs performed on system equipment.
  • Respond to system emergencies to provide services during storm events to restore normal operations.

Qualifications

Education/Experience:

  • Requires two (2) years of journey-level machinist/millwright experience OR
  • Four (4) years of machine work/mechanical repair experience OR
  • A combination of education/experience/training which provides an equivalent background required to perform the work of the class.

License Certification and Other Requirements:

  • Current Washington State drivers license
  • Confined space Fall Protection and Traffic Control Certifications are required within one (1) year of employment.

Work Environment/Physical Demands:

  • Requires considerable physical exertion.
  • Requires working around potentially hazardous equipment chemicals raw sewage toxic gases rotating machinery high voltage high pressure and heavy equipment.
  • Work will be performed outdoors in all weather conditions and sometimes in heavy traffic.
  • Occasionally requires working at heights depths (up to 60 feet) or in confined and awkward workspaces inclement weather conditions fall slip and trip hazards and live traffic.
  • May occasionally be required to be on-call 24 hours a day and to work extended shifts as required.
  • Employee may be required to work any shift or schedule.

The ideal candidate may possess:

  • Ability to work from blueprints.
  • Ability to make decisions concerning appropriate repair maintenance or design needs of specialized parts or tools.
  • Ability to use good judgement in recommending cost effectiveness of designs.

The full salary range for this position is $51.52 - $53.71 per hour.
