Definition
Under general supervision from the Fleet Automotive Manager and/or Shop Lead performs skilled mechanical work in diagnosing repairing and maintaining a variety of gasoline diesel-powered and emergency vehicles and equipment. This job classification is a Job Progression position. This job class is treated as FLSA non-exempt.
Essential Functions: (Essential functions may vary among positions but may include the following tasks knowledge abilities skills and other characteristics. This list of tasks is ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY and is not intended to be a comprehensive listing of tasks performed by all positions in this classification.)
Distinguishing Features: The Automotive Tech (I) performs general auto mechanic duties and differs from the Automotive Tech (II) which requires competency trade certification.
Examples of Tasks
Tasks:
1. Inspects troubleshoots diagnoses and repairs tractors automobiles trucks heavy equipment motorcycles ATV and emergency vehicles.
2. Diagnoses and repairs braking electrical air conditioning and cooling systems.
3. Analyzes diagnoses and repairs vehicle front end assemblies and wheel alignment problems. Mounts rotates and balances tires according to required specifications as needed.
4. Services and tunes engines overhauls and rebuilds transmissions rear-end assemblies carburetors fuel injectors fuel and water pumps hydraulic systems and entire engines. Diagnoses and resolves engine drivability problems such stalling smoking etc. using required diagnostic methods.
5. Installs clutches shock absorbers radiators lights electrical components and other parts as needed.
6. Utilizes the current fleet management system to enter parts used and time worked.
7. May work in a shop and in the field to perform required repairs or maintenance.
8. Performs other related job duties as assigned that enhance and facilitate program operations.
Knowledge Skills Abilities and Other Characteristics:
- Knowledge of methods principles practices tools and materials of the mechanics trade including those associated with automotive heavy equipment motorcycle ATV and emergency vehicle service and repairs.
- Knowledge of the principles and mechanics of internal combustion engines.
- Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions associated with automotive equipment repair/maintenance.
- Skill operating all types of related technical diagnostic equipment.
- Skill operating a variety of automotive/heavy equipment.
- Skill in the use of hand/power automotive repair tools.
- Skill performing bumper to bumper automotive repairs.
- Ability to lift objects over 50 pounds.
- Ability to drive a tow truck.
- Ability to work in cramp and dusty spaces.
- Ability to work in a variety of weather conditions with exposure to the elements.
- Ability to lift arms above shoulder to perform work tasks.
- Ability to read manuals and instructions.
- Ability to bend or stoop repeatedly or continually.
Minimum Qualifications
Education & Experience: Graduation from high school or GED equivalent and experience equivalent to four (2) years of full-time automotive maintenance/repair work; OR satisfactory completion of a recognized apprenticeship course.
- Equivalency Any equivalent combination of training and experience that would enable the candidate to satisfactorily perform and meet the duties and responsibilities required may be considered in meeting the stated minimum qualifications.
Underfill Eligibility: An enrolled Community Member whom closely qualifies for the minimum qualifications for a position may be considered for employment under SRPMIC Policy 2-19 Underfill
Special Requirements
- Must possess and maintain a valid Arizona Drivers License.
- Position may be covered by Federal DOT regulations and may be subject to the Federal Department of Transportation testing requirements.
Prior to hire as an employee applicants will be subject to drug and alcohol testing. Will be required to pass a pre-employment background/fingerprint check.
