Job Description Summary:
The Director of Enterprise Risk Management is responsible for the plans and programs that protect lives and property prevent accidents and incidents and preserve the learning environment and business operations of the University. Reporting directly to the Chief Operating Officer and Treasurer the Director of Enterprise Risk Management provides executive-level leadership to Enterprise Risk Management and Insurance Emergency Management and Business Continuity Security and Environmental Health and Safety.
This position will focus on the Universitys Enterprise Risk Management Safety and Security by focusing on hazard-based risk identification mitigation and controls. The Director of Enterprise Risk Management will also provide support and expertise to University local state and federal partners.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) and Insurance
- Provide subject matter expertise and consultation related to insurance and risk management services.
- Manage the certificate of insurance request process to facilitate third-party receipt of the universitys evidence of insurance and receipt of incoming certificates of insurance.
- Verify compliance with insurance requirements in University contracts and agreements ensuring appropriate coverage and limits additional insured language and effective dates.
- Assist with follow-up on recommendations made by insurance carriers or brokers to prevent or minimize losses.
- Support the administration of insurance policies that require ongoing management; examples may include processing registrations tracking exposure data or reporting of information.
- Coordinates the development and delivery of risk safety and insurance programs and services for all leased or owned University properties.
- Conduct claims evaluations and accident inquiries and evaluate risk management claims information to identify significant hazards and loss trends; identify and recommend preventative measures and corrective actions.
- Administers the Universitys workers compensation program and insurance. Investigates and analyze work-related accidents and injuries.
- Works closely with selected brokers insurance carriers and employees to monitor and resolve claims.
- Coordinates with the Office of People and Culture to obtain required records and manage employee return to work.
- Identify potential areas of risk and recommend and implement preventive measures.
Emergency Management and Business Continuity
- Chair to the Crisis Response Team (CRT). Leads the CRT to develop implement and assess an effective Emergency Operations Plan (EOP) and effective teamwork among the members of the CRT.
- Conducts supervises and evaluates campus emergency response drills and implementation of Incident Command System (ICS) and National Incident Management System (NIMS) training within the CRT.
- Collaborates with the President and other senior leadership to create a climate of safety and security throughout the University.
- Develops monitors and evaluates a comprehensive EOP to be administered University-wide to ensure appropriate emergency preparedness and response from all students faculty and staff.
- Develops implements administers and assesses life safety fire control and disaster preparedness programs systems and procedures.
- Responsible for implementing all necessary safety training for students faculty and staff in a wide range of situations at every campus location. Ensures all University locations have the necessary safety equipment and supplies.
- Leads University-wide contingency planning and business continuity efforts.
- Collaborates with administrators faculty and staff to annually review test and update continuity plans to maintain functional operation during or following disruptive events as well as provide updates to the University Business Continuity Summary Plan.
- As necessary provide training on the continuity software and provide tabletop or other exercises to test plan readiness by unit and/or department.
- Additionally designs builds and implements standard risk assessments business impact analysis and other business continuity tools and capabilities.
- Maintains effective collaborative and proactive relationships with local state and federal emergency response agencies as well as other college and university emergency management departments.
Security
- Develop monitor and evaluate the University-wide security program utilizing contracted security services to ensure the protection of SMU assets staff faculty students and visitors.
- Develops enforces and reviews University security policies and procedures and ensures the staff students and faculty are informed of said policies and procedures.
- Oversees and implements the Universitys access control and camera systems.
- Annually prepares and submits The Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act.
- Maintains effective collaborative and proactive relationships with local state and federal law enforcement agencies as well as other college and university security and law enforcement departments.
Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S):
- In coordination with contracted EH&S vendor develops maintains and communicates health and safety policies and procedures.
- Work collaboratively with the Office of People and Culture and other departments to ensure the effective implementation of health and safety programs.
- Perform periodic inspections of workplace facilities to detect fire and life safety hazards and conditions. Make recommendations for corrective measures.
- Perform job safety analysis and recommend safety equipment and safe work procedures and communicate with departments to achieve safety excellence.
- Conduct investigations into employee inquiries suggestions and complaints regarding workplace health and safety issues.
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge and understanding of federal state and local fire safety environmental and health regulations and procedures.
- Stay informed of developments in relevant fields including legislative trends.
- Maintain records as needed for University compliance with safety and environmental laws.
- Serves as campus liaison with city state and federal regulators including inspectors engineers source control and enforcement personnel.
- Ensure general facility compliance with all local state federal and general requirements.
Other duties as assigned.

Samuel Merritt University currently provides base salary ranges for all positions-on job advertisements-in the United States based on local requirements.
