Job Summary

  • Completion of a two-year diploma in Police Studies Security Criminology or a related field plus a minimum of three (3) years of strong customer service experience including at least one (1) year of diverse law enforcement experience. OR
  • Completion of Grade 12 and a minimum of five (5) years of experience in a recognized law enforcement environment; or have been a serving Police Officer in Canada within the last 5 years; or employed as a Peace Officer Level I within Alberta for at least two (2) years.

  • Knowledge of another language
  • Knowledge of or training in harm reduction anti-racism Indigenous awareness and GBA
  • Experience in Animal handling

Skills required for success:

  • Excellent conflict management and de-escalation skills when dealing with volatile situations or hostile animals
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills for preparing concise investigative reports
  • Ability to make independent calm decisions under pressure
  • Proficiency in using various computer applications and Records Management Systems
  • Ability to be empathetic and compassionate with people living in difficult situations
  • Professional knowledge of the Community Peace Officer Program provincial requirements and standards
  • Knowledge of City of Edmonton policies procedures and law
  • Knowledge of operational and tactical planning
  • Knowledge and experience working with diverse communities
  • Demonstrated understanding of racism and discrimination as it pertains to law enforcement and how bias can influence behaviour and decisions
  • Knowledge and practical application of dealing with difficult persons; strong analytical problem solving and conflict resolution skills
  • Must possess strong presentation and public speaking skills
  • Excellent customer service interpersonal organizational and time management skills
  • Excellent team player with the ability to contribute to a high performing team
  • A proven ability to work well within a unionized workforce

Conditions of Employment:

  • Hire is dependent on Police Information Check with Vulnerable Sector Check satisfactory to the City of Edmonton
  • Candidates are required to hold a valid Alberta Class 5 drivers licence (or provincial equivalent). Obtaining and maintaining a City Drivers permit is a requirement of this position
  • Possession of current Intermediate First Aid CPR-C and AED certifications
  • Candidates must be able to obtain or have successfully completed the Physical Abilities Readiness Evaluation (P.A.R.E.) prior to employment
  • Must possess or be able to obtain the Provincial Community Peace Officer I designation with completion of the Community Peace Officer Induction Program - CPOIP as well as the Municipal Bylaw Officer appointment
  • Applicants may be tested

Work Environment:

  • Due to the nature of this work this position is not eligible for a hybrid work arrangement
  • Ability to work in physically demanding and sometimes dangerous environments
  • Must be able to work independently on confidential and complex issues
  • Ability to work outdoors under various weather and environmental conditions
  • Evening weekend and statutory holiday availability is required
  • On-call services outside of business hours are required
  • This is a public-facing role and requires engagement and interaction with diverse people from various backgrounds

Hours of Work: 40 hours per week. Evening weekend and statutory holiday availability is required.

Salary Range: $40.445 - $46.180 (Hourly); $84449.160 - $96423.840 (Annually)

What will you do

  • Respond to public complaints and conduct proactive officer-initiated patrols related to domestic animals and wildlife. Patrol parks and green spaces to monitor compliance and enforce animal-related regulations
  • Investigate animal-related incidents which may include the capture of domestic animals livestock or problem wildlife
  • Apply appropriate enforcement actions such as warnings violation tickets search warrants and animal seizures
  • Liaise with the Edmonton Police Service social service agencies and other collaborators to solve community issues
  • Manage data and evidence by completing detailed investigative reports and disclosure packages for crown prosecution
  • Represent the City in court proceedings providing professional testimony and evidence
  • Engage with the public by providing educational presentations to schools community groups and any other interested parties
  • Other duties as required
