Job Summary

The School of Arts & Sciences at Washington University in St. Louis invites applications for two full-time professors of practice in the newly established Program in Public Health & Society (PH&S) starting in August 2026 for the 2026-2027 academic year. This exciting opportunity will support the growth of the new major in Public Health & Society developed in collaboration with the new School of Public Health. The position plays a pivotal role in shaping the future of public health education within a liberal arts context advancing a transdisciplinary foundation across public health natural and social sciences arts and humanities.

Position Overview:

Successful candidates will be an integral part of the PH&S Program contributing to the core and elective curriculum advising students and developing new courses. This role is designed to ensure the sustainability and success of the minor and major by addressing the growing interest in public health studies within the student body. Practice-track faculty will:

  • Teach core courses required for the PH&S minor and major ensuring these offerings are available with the frequency needed to meet demand.
  • Create and lead elective courses in areas of personal expertise helping to fill current curricular gaps.
  • Provide comprehensive student advising supporting the anticipated high level of student engagement and interest in the new programs.
  • Collaborate with co-directors faculty and staff to build and sustain the infrastructure needed for the successful continuity of the PH&S programs.



  • A Masters degree in Public Health or a related interdisciplinary field is required; a Doctoral degree in Public Health or a related interdisciplinary field is preferred.
  • Demonstrated excellence in teaching at the undergraduate level.
  • Experience in developing new courses and curricula.
  • Strong commitment to student advising and mentorship.
  • Ability to engage in interdisciplinary collaboration and contribute to a transdisciplinary program.
  • Interest and expertise in one or more of the following: public health ethics social determinants of health global health health policy environmental health epidemiology health-related research methods artificial intelligence health informatics.

A person in this role will be able to support at least one or more of the following required Core Courses:

  • Foundations in Public Health: Ethics Policy and Power (3 credits)
  • Introduction to Public and Global Health (3 credits)
  • Public Health Theories Models and Frameworks (3 credits)
  • Research Methods in Understanding Health and Society (3 credits majors only)
  • APEX: Advanced Practical Experience in Public Health (4 credits capstone experience majors only)

Applicants for the rank of professor of practice should have demonstrated mastery in the practice of their discipline and achieved regional or national prominence in the field. Outstanding teaching and service record commensurate with appointment at that rank are required. While professor of practice appointments carry the high standards of excellence productivity and professional contributions associated with other faculty appointments at the University they do not include an expectation of research activities.
