About CASA House

You will be part of a team that provides individual group and family therapy social and life skills training and on-site schooling in small classroom settings. CASA House is a live-in program for teens who need support with significant mental health and/or addiction challenges. Teens stay at CASA House for an average of four months.

Job Details

Salary/Wage range: $40.20 - $50.95
Vacation: 15 Vacation Days
Shift structure: Monday to Friday 7.25 hours per day. Shift rotation includes days and evenings

About the Role

The Recreation Therapist is responsible for providing therapeutic recreation services in functional intervention leisure education and recreation participation. Responsible for assessing the patients recreation and leisure needs developing treatment plans and providing therapeutic programs/activities to meet these needs. This role can include guidance support supervision and case management to children adolescents and their families in CASA programming.

The Recreation Therapist will:
  • Completes recreation therapy assessments on clients and evaluates needs and capabilities to determine goals and treatment plans.
  • Screens assesses and treats patients individually and/or in groups.
  • Facilitates instructs and motivates clients in therapeutic recreation activities.
  • Evaluates patient progress and intervention modalities and modifies treatment plan as required.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities
  • Thorough understanding of therapeutic recreation principles and their application in mental health treatment.
  • Knowledge of child and adolescent development particularly in relation to emotional and behavioral challenges.
  • Ability to assess clients recreation/leisure needs and develop individualized treatment plans.
  • Skill in designing and delivering evidence-based therapeutic programs (e.g. functional intervention leisure education recreation participation).

Qualifications and Experience
  • Active or eligible registration for Professional Membership with Alberta Therapeutic Recreation Association (ATRA)
  • Must maintain Therapeutic Crisis Intervention (TCI) certification (training provided by CASA) and be physically able to perform all interventions.
  • Canadian Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS)designation is preferred but not mandatory.
  • Valid Class 5 drivers license and access to a vehicle.


Conditions of Employment
  • A satisfactory Criminal Records Check with Vulnerable Sector Search and Child Intervention Check. This would be the financial responsibility of the successful candidate.
  • Ability to pass and maintain Therapeutic Crisis Intervention (TCI) certification (training provided by CASA) as well asphysical ability to perform all interventions.

Working Conditions
  • High level of physical effort (6070%) attributable to clinical duties
  • Need to stand lift bend and rotate when conducting therapeutic recreation
  • Must be able and willing to lift and carry up to 10 pounds
  • Adequate vision and hearing to interact with patients and team members.
