JOB TITLE: School Resource Officer
PAY GRADE: 301
PAY RANGE: $26.27 /hour - $35.44 /hour; $54641.60 - $73715.20 annualized.
Plus assignment pay of $75.00 for 24 pay periods per year.
JOB TYPE: Non-exempt Full-time Monday- Friday daytime and based upon school assignment.
Must be available for after-school activities and subject to work some weekends or
holidays based upon agency needs.

REPORTS TO:School Resource Officer Sergeant(s) Training and Education Division Captain

JOB SUMMARY/PURPOSE:The School Resource Officer (SRO) serves as a sworn law enforcement officer assigned to a school campus to ensure the safety security and well-being of students staff and visitors. This position builds positive relationships within the school community while upholding the laws of the state and the policies of the Sheriffs Office. The SRO works collaboratively with school administrators teachers and parents to prevent and respond to criminal activity maintain a safe learning environment and provide law-related education to addition to enforcing laws and handling incidents on campus the SRO acts as a mentor and resource promoting respect responsibility and good citizenship among students. The SRO also participates in safety planning emergency response preparedness and community outreach initiatives to strengthen trust between law enforcement and the educational community.
ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- An SRO has all the essential duties and responsibilities of a deputy sheriff.
- Must have a strong interest in working with all the youth of Citrus County in an educational atmosphere.
- Communicate and relate to students at all levels of education and various backgrounds to include students with emotional and physical disabilities.
- Teaches various classes (Choices Know the Law FOCUS Child Lures Jr. FOCUS) or other classroom presentations as required.
- Actively patrol campus during instructional periods and be seen throughout the campus during drop off and pick up times.
- Conducts criminal investigations regarding incidents occurring on school campuses or involving students.
- Work with teachers and school administrators throughout the workday and at special events.
- Work with school administrators threat assessment teams and other educational professionals in developing assisting and coordinating safety plans.
- Collaborate with school personnel in creative resourceful and innovative ways in developing and maintaining a safe school atmosphere.
- All CCSO employees are considered essential emergency workers and are subject to working in any capacity/hours deemed necessary by the Agency during activations including but not limited to in-County and out-of-County deployments.
SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Excellent oral written and communication skills.
- Excellent public speaking skills in front of differing ages and backgrounds.
- Strong desire to engage in special projects assigned by supervision and to help develop new programs.
- Ability to create a safe and secure learning environment for students faculty and staff at their assigned school campus.
- Ability to lead motivate and provide an atmosphere where students feel comfortable in communicating with law enforcement teachers and administrators.
- Exercise safe and sound judgment.
- Ability to review school related incidents and recommend operational and training needs to both law enforcement and school personnel.
EDUCATION EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS:
- Requires current Florida Law Enforcement certification.
- Requires a minimum one-year full-time road patrol experience.
- School Resource Officer certification is preferred. (FASRO/NASRO/FCPTI or similar)
- Associate or bachelors degree from an accredited college preferred.
- Teaching experience is preferred but not required.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
- Meet physical requirement of all sworn positions.
- Work in a variant of temperatures and situations based upon curriculum and mission.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Must have the legal right to work in the United States.
- Valid Florida Drivers License
- If a current CCSO employee then no disciplinary actions within the last 12 months and completion of current position time commitment requirement.
GENERAL PERFORMANCE EXPECTATIONS:
- Demonstrates polite helpful and courteous behavior respecting cultural differences when interacting with the public and colleagues.
- Responds to supervision guidance and direction in a positive receptive manner.
- Must be appropriately dressed and groomed.
- Reports to work promptly and properly prepared notifying supervisor of intended absences.
- Acts in a professional manner following established protocols and procedures.
An oral board with job-related questions and/or scenarios will be administered on a date specifically set with all potential candidates notified at least three days in advance of the specified date. The oral board passing score will be 80% or higher. All candidates/employees will compete against one another for one position and the final selection to fill this slot will be made by the Sheriff. The Sheriff reserves the right to make selections from internal or external sources.
