Job Duties

The Virginia Department of Juvenile Justice (DJJ) protects the public by preparing court-involved youth to be successful citizens. DJJ is committed to excellence in public safety by providing effective interventions that improve the lives of youth strengthening both families and communities within the Commonwealth.

DJJ is hiring a Payroll/Benefits Accountant. This role independently performs the processing analysis and reconciliation of payroll and benefits accounting functions for Bon Air Juvenile Correctional Center. Processes complex payroll and benefits transactions for semi-monthly classified and bi-weekly wage employees; reviews Cardinal reports to correct errors and make necessary updates; handles court-ordered withholdings direct deposits and voluntary deductions. Prepare payments for distribution to third party vendors; pursues collection of overpayments; analyzes and resolves exceptions; and provides excellent customer service.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Considerable knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and payroll practices rules and regulations affecting payroll tax and other legal deduction.
  • Extensive Cardinal HCM payroll experience.
  • Knowledge of pre-tax requirements and automated payroll processing.
  • Strong analytical organizational interpersonal oral and written communications and customer service skills.
  • Skilled in the use of a personal computer (Microsoft Office Suite preferred) and automated accounting and payroll systems.

  • Maintains strong customer services levels for internal and external customers.
