Jonson & Johnson Innovative Medicine Research & Development is recruiting a Senior Director External Innovation DPDS (Synthetic Modality Focused) located in either San Francisco or San Diego

As the molecular invention and product development engine ofResearch & Development for J&J Innovative Medicine Discovery Product Development and Supply (DPDS) aims to unlock the potential of the most promising disease targets and drug candidates regardless of source stage or modality to discover develop and deliver transformational medicines for patients.
Within DPDS the External Innovation team is now looking for an extraordinary Senior Director who is passionate about taking a leadership role to identify shape onboard and nurture external partnerships that support the DPDS innovation strategy.
You will be a senior member of the Global External Innovation Team DPDS with overall strategic and operational responsibility for scouting and evaluation of external opportunities in the West North America (WNA) region with a particular emphasis and deep expertise in synthetic modalities (small molecules peptides oligonucleotides and platforms to support their discovery/development). You will need to have strong business acumen and the ability to understand the DPDS overall innovation strategy and how it connects to the TAs strategic priorities. You must also have the necessary experience and scientific imagination to recognize early stage innovation that has the potential to significantly improve patient outcomes in the future
The expectation is that this leader will - as proactive discussion partner for the TA representatives in the broad WNA region- take the lead to optimize the DPDS / TA interface in order to deliver against our current and future portfolio of therapeutics. You will also support global External Innovation Team DPDS with local scouting and transactional support in collaboration with sourcing and activation functions.
Your Responsibilities:
In partnership with your local biologic modalities counterpart lead the WNA component of the advancement of external technological innovation within DPDS in alignment with strategy and in support of the vision of Johnson and Johnson Innovative Medicines
Work closely with the rest of the Global DPDS EI team to bring innovation opportunities from the WNA region into a global view and help to assess the science to choose the best opportunities to move forward independent of geography
Present to senior stakeholders on science and technology explaining strategic alignment and acting as a champion whilst keeping a strong eye on the data to support an opportunity
Develop a broad and effective cross-functional network; build positive and productive working relationships with internal and external stakeholders
Act as the voice of J&J Innovative Medicine to external biotech companies academic institutes and other external partners (conferences partnering events etc) in the WNA region talking eloquently about J&J priorities and presenting J&J as a preferred partner.
In partnership with J&J Business development External Scientific Innovation and Therapeutic Area stakeholders lead asset based due diligence for DPDS from a modality perspective bringing together internal experts and driving decision enabling scientific risk assessments
Act as the subject matter expert in deal teams to work closely with partners transactors and legal to turn scientific partnership opportunities into successfully executed contracts
Ensure Credo Values are demonstrated in all day-to-day interactions
This position is located at either the San Francisco Innovation Center or the La Jolla R&D site and is a hybrid position (3 days on site). It likely requires up to 20% travel.
Qualifications
PhD 10 years of industrial drug discovery (or development) experience or MS 15 years of industrial drug discovery (or development) experience required
Deep and demonstratable scientific expertise in synthetic modalities demonstrated by peer reviewed publications and patents
Concentration/Major in the following: Synthetic organic chemistry medicinal chemistry Biochemistry or Pharmaceutical Sciences is preferred
Leadership skills as well as a demonstrable ability to think strategically and deliver on strategic objectives are required
Business and transactions experience playing a scientific expert role but with a strong eye on the terms needed in a contract and good knowledge of IP provisions is strongly preferred
Demonstratable experience as an end-to-end drug discovery project leader in the (bio)pharmaceutical industry is strongly preferred
Experience with modern techniques such as AI/ML driven discovery new high dimensional biology translational approaches etc would be an advantage
Proficiency in planning proactivity self-motivation and the ability to work independently are required
Excellent oral and written communication skills
Well-developed intercultural social skills are highly valued.
