This position is open to all King County Employees and the General Public.

King County Metro is seeking a Transportation Planner II to support innovative alternative services for paratransit riders including a same-day pilot program (such as Metro Flex Access On-Demand). This role serves as a deputy project manager or task lead on pilot projects providing day-to-day coordination analysis and oversight while supporting planning implementation and evaluation efforts aligned with Metros goals. The position works closely with internal partners across the organization and external partners such as contractors researchers and consultants to advance accessible data-informed transportation solutions. The successful candidate will bring strong project coordination communication and analytical skills the ability to translate technical information for diverse audiences and a commitment to equity and social justice in transportation planning.

This recruitment will be used to fill one TLT/SDA addition this selection process may be used to generate an eligibility pool for future career service term limited temporary and special duty assignment vacancies that may occur in this classification within this workgroup. The eligibility pool will be retained for 12 months from the date of posting and may be used at the discretion of the hiring authority.

Job Duties

As a Transportation Planner II you will:

  • Serve as deputy project manager or task lead for alternative service pilot projects for paratransit riders such as the same-day and on-demand service initiatives
  • Support Accessible Services by completing project management analysis visualization and coordination tasks
  • Support the planning implementation and evaluation of alternative service programs projects and policy recommendations in line with Metro goals
  • Project coordination with internal partners across division department and organization
  • Coordinate with external partners including contractors researchers consultants
  • Support community engagement and communications efforts for pilot projects and alternative services
  • Prepare and present clear accessible written and visual information to a variety of internal and external work groups project teams and partners
  • Provide day to day program oversight for specific pilot projects
  • Support pilot programs through the decision-making processes including necessary documentation analysis and engagement with Metro leadership

Experience Qualifications Knowledge Skills

We are looking for candidates who meet the following Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelors Degree in Urban Planning Transportation Engineering Public Administration or related field OR any equivalent combination of experience and education that provides the applicant with the skills knowledge and abilities required to perform the work
  • Work experience in public transportation planning or related field
  • Experience in working collaboratively with internal and external partners
  • Experience in managing and prioritizing a diverse workload to accomplish tasks on defined timelines in a fast-paced environment
  • Demonstrated oral communication technical writing and visual communications skills showing ability to effectively translate and interpret technical information to non-technical audiences
  • Proficient in MS Office including MS Teams SharePoint Outlook Word and PowerPoint

Desirable Qualifications

  • Masters Degree in Planning (Land Use Urban Regional Transportation Environmental) Public Administration or closely related field or an equivalent of experience and education
  • Experience in researching and analyzing pilot projects and using data to inform service planning recommendations and decision-making processes
  • Experience coordinating with contractors to develop proposals/plans for alternative transportation services for paratransit riders
  • Familiarity established relationships and/or experience coordinating with internal teams at Metro and external partners such as contractors and research organizations
  • Familiarity of the current market conditions of alternative transportation services for paratransit riders such as same day service
  • Proficient in project management strategies including meeting facilitation agenda-setting and follow-up and using Microsoft teams and SharePoint for project management and coordination
  • Proficient in using ArcGIS software and excel data to analyze transit service
  • Experience in using GIS and other relevant programs to conduct planning analysis and design documentation
  • Strong understanding of government processes and procedures including regulation policy development and service planning and local considerations within King County
  • Experience using equity and social justice lens in transportation planning projects

WorkSchedule
This position is non-exempt from the provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act and is eligible for overtime pay. The work week is normally 40 hours Monday through Friday. Alternative work schedules may be possible.

WorkLocation
This is a hybrid position. The main work site for this position is King Street Center 201 S Jackson St. Seattle WA 98104. The team works in a hybrid model with days in the office as well as telecommuting. Currently there will be a minimum of one day per week required in the office. The ratio of remote to onsite work will be dependent on business needs and is subject to change. Employees will have access to shared workspaces at various King County facilities. Employees must reside in Washington state and within a reasonable distance to their King County worksite to respond to workplace reporting requirements.
