Job Summary

POSITION: Camp Counselor II Aquatics

REPORTS TO: Director Camp

STATUS: Seasonal Full-Time Exempt Camp Worker (as defined in Section 18897 of the Health and Safety Code) Will be approximately between Mid-June and Mid-August. Final dates will be confirmed at offer.

SALARY RANGE: $82.71-$92.71/daily rate (per CA Labor Code 1182.4) paid semi-monthly

Founded in San Francisco in 1902 the LightHouses purpose is to promote the independence equality and self-reliance of people who are blind or visually impaired. The LightHouse is currently in a period of growth increasing our capacity to serve more low-vision and blind clients.

OVERVIEW:

The aquatics program area leader is responsible for preparing and implementing safe fun and appropriate programs for the blind and visually impaired children and adults. They will coordinate and oversee all camp aquatics activities.

  • Boating
  • All camp swims
  • Other

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must be 18 years of age or older
  • High School graduate
  • Some college education preferred
  • Current First Aid and CPR certifications
  • Previous work in a camp school or community service setting
  • Experience working with individuals who are blind/visually impaired preferred
  • Knowledge of Braille and/or sign language preferred

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Waterfront Program Leadership
  • Plan direct and supervise a safe engaging and inclusive waterfront program.
  • Oversee aquatics classes and activities ensuring structured and supervised instruction.
  • Assess the effectiveness of aquatics programs and activities making necessary improvements.
  • Safety & Staff Training
  • Train staff on their responsibilities in aquatics areas ensuring proper safety protocols.
  • Ensure all campers and staff adhere to waterfront safety guidelines at all times.
  • Facility & Equipment Management
  • Set up and maintain waterfront and aquatics program areas.
  • Instruct and oversee proper use of aquatics equipment.
  • Conduct daily checks for safety cleanliness and necessary repairs.
  • Maintain inventory of aquatics equipment and supplies ensuring timely replacements.
  • Camper & Staff Supervision
  • Assist with camper placements in swim classes and living assignments as needed.
  • Evaluate volunteers Counselors-in-Training (CITs) and counselors throughout the summer providing feedback to the Assistant Director.
  • Step in as a camp counselor when necessary to support camper supervision.
  • Camp Engagement & Collaboration
  • Participate enthusiastically in all camp activities leading and assisting as assigned.
  • Help organize and supervise evening programs special events overnights and all-camp activities.
  • Attend and actively participate in staff meetings.

  • Maintain 100% confidentiality of individual health behavior concerns and other personal information of campers and staff.
  • Consistently learn and communicate a blindness-positive philosophy by applying current best practices in 100% of interactions as assessed through regular supervisor participant and peer feedback.
  • Consistently demonstrate respect and inclusivity by using culturally appropriate language and behavior in 100% of interactions as assessed through regular supervisor participant and peer feedback.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must be willing to live on camp premises
  • Must be able to lift 70 pounds
  • Ability to enforce safety and emergency procedures
  • Ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards related to the activity
  • Physical ability to respond appropriately to situation requiring first aid
  • Must be able to assist campers in an emergency (fire evacuation illness or injury)
  • Possess the endurance required to maintain constant supervision of campers
