This position will lead and manage functions within the pathology and laboratory services at UI Health Care Medical Center Downtown campus. This includes supervising assigned personnel performing assigned administrative functions overseeing and managing technical and operational functions of the laboratory and performing other tasks and duties as assigned. This position collaborates effectively with the Medical Director to ensure timely service delivery operational efficiency and regulatory compliance throughout the laboratory.

Position Responsibilities
Human Resources Management
Hire develop and manage the performance of staff and supervisors; assure staff and supervisors are compliant with policies procedures and regulations.
Provides feedback and supports HR initiatives in a positive manner.
Acts as the primary facilitator for coaching counseling and mentoring of leadership technical and student staff in the assigned subsection.
Is self-directed in identifying/escalating complex or significant performance issues to attention of Human Resources and/or Compliance staff in a timely and appropriate manner.
Develops implements analyzes and revises the staffing model for the laboratory in a manner that demonstrates knowledge of and compliance with departmental SOPs and other standards as specified in the appropriate employee handbook collective bargaining agreement and/or University Operations manual.
Performs associated activities in UI Health Care timekeeping/scheduling system.
Financial and Data Management and Analysis
Prepare and/or assist in budget development; provide projections and recommendations.
Manage financial and productivity data and monitor the budget to meet goals. Resolve budget discrepancies.
Collects and analyzes productivity data.
Assists with development and prioritization of requests for human and capital resources including requests for personnel space equipment and instrumentation.
Operations Standards of Care Regulatory Compliance Quality and Patient Satisfaction
Ensure standards of care regulatory compliance QA and safety regulations are followed. Engage staff in meeting plan goals.
Provide clinical testing advice to sections when needed and help troubleshoot testing problems as they arise.
Investigates and recommends corrective action in response to errors or near misses in the delivery of assigned laboratory/clinical services.
Prepares and maintains assigned laboratory functions and clinical services in a state of compliance with regulatory standards; demonstrates responsiveness to identified regulatory concerns suggesting and as appropriate operationalizing and evaluating corrective action plans.
Patient Care/Services
Directs patient care delivery related to laboratory services; may provide some patient care.
Establishes and modifies systems (including workflows instrumentation equipment and service delivery models) for the provision of timely effective and appropriate laboratory and related clinical services.
Monitors evaluates and addresses staff compliance with laboratory departmental UI Health Care and University Policies and procedures.
May occasionally provide assistance with bench level or supporting tasks/functions as appropriate based on urgent needs in the laboratory and technical/clinical background.
Planning and Goal Management
Develop action plans for the unit that meet strategic goals.
Effectively collaborates with colleagues throughout the University of Iowa Health Care and with appropriate personnel from off-site and referral laboratories and other clients/agencies.
Identifies need for additional instrumentation equipment clinical services as appropriate.
Works collaboratively with leadership on space design renovations or new capital building initiatives.
Communication/Collaboration
Communicate with physicians staff and other units/departments on a regular basis to promote effective and efficient operations within the department.
Communicate with patients families and staff to address and resolve issues.
Demonstrates appropriate and effective written electronic and verbal communication throughout the laboratory.
Identifies need for broadcasts or other communication to others outside of Pathology and develops such communication in consultation with Medical Director and staff from Marketing/Communications as indicated.
Education Programs
Provide evaluative feedback to staff; work with clinical instructors/educators to facilitate clinical education.
In conjunction with the ALMs in the Emory Warner Clinical Laboratories and in collaboration with representatives from Pathology Education participates in the planning for and potential development and evaluation of clinical rotations in the laboratory.
Perform other tasks and duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
Masters degree in clinical laboratory sciences from an accredited college or university or an equivalent combination of education and experience is required.
3-5 years experience in laboratory or health care supervision is required.
3-5 years experience working directly in laboratory or health care operations is required.
Excellent written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills are required.
Demonstrated experience working effectively in a welcoming and respectful workplace environment.
Desired Qualifications
Prior experience directly supervising staff in a clinical laboratory setting or in a direct patient care or patient care support services setting is highly desired.
Prior experience working in a clinical laboratory setting is highly desired.
Prior experience working in an academic health center is desired.
Demonstrated success in leading interdisciplinary teams is desired.
Certification (or eligibility for certification) by the American Society of Clinical Pathology and/or National Certification Agency is highly desired.
