The Role
The Software Engineering Lead is a hands-on team member that helps a capable product team deliver their Integrate actuarial development environment reliably and continuously. This is a playercoach role: you write code support engineers improve how work moves from idea to production and keep the team aligned with Product QA and Operations.
Our engineers act as product engineers. Your impact comes from creating clarity in ambiguous spaces improving delivery discipline and raising the bar across the team.
Your Responsibilities:
- Contribute directly to the codebase while supporting shielding and unblocking the team.
- Continuously improve how workflows from idea to production so changes ship quickly safely and with minimal ceremony.
- Help shape solutions when problems are not fully definedworking with stakeholders to understand the domain clarify intent and make pragmatic trade-offs.
- Champion modern engineering practices: small changes automated testing CI/CD and low-risk releases.
- Partner with QA and Operations to build quality observability and reliability into everyday work.
- Use simple metrics and feedback loops to improve flow reduce risk and learn from incidents.
- Coach engineers across experience levels through reviews pairing and clear expectations.
- Act as connective tissue across Product QA Ops and Engineeringclarifying ownership and keeping teams aligned.
Job Knowledge Experience Skills
Job Knowledge Required
- Strong practical engineering background /C# and/or React/TypeScript or similar stack.
- Experience delivering software via CI/CD and automated quality gates.
- 5 years of relevant software industry experience with a bachelors degreeâfocusedâon softwareâengineeringâcomputer science financial engineering actuarial science or mathematics.â
- Aâdegree is not a requirement if you haveârelevantâindustry experience.
- Experience leading engineers in a hands-on engineering lead or playercoach capacity.
Experience and Soft Skills Required
- A mindset oriented toward continuous delivery reliability and sustainable pace.
- Experience using AI-assisted development tools (e.g. GitHub Copilot Cursor Codex) in production engineering workflows.
- Comfort working in ambiguous problem spaces where requirements are evolving or incomplete.
- Ability to understand enough of the domain to help define solutionsnot just execute specs.
- Comfort leading through influence in cross-functional matrixed environments.
- Clear pragmatic communication and sound judgment.
Location
This role is based out of the Milliman office in Chicago IL but candidates hired into this role may work remotely anywhere in the US.

Compensation
- The overall salary range for this role is $117500 - $222985.
- For candidates residing in: Alaska California Connecticut Illinois Maryland Massachusetts New Jersey New York City Pennsylvania Virginia Washington or the District of Columbia the salary range is $135125 - $222985.
- All other locations the salary range is $117500 - $193900.
A combination of factors will be considered including but not limited to education relevant work experience qualifications skills certifications etc.
