Description of Work

Do you enjoy working with interiorscapes and maintaining a diverse plant collection The North Carolina Zoo is seeking an experienced Horticulturist to work in its Interior Horticulture section.
Key Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Propagation in greenhouses and nursery
Overseeing the daily care and maintenance of the greenhouse plant collection.
Maintaining thorough knowledge of the assigned plant collection
Performing plant maintenance and identification; and carrying out watering potting planting removal installation transplanting fertilization weed control plant inventory pest management (including insects diseases and vermin) pruning and propagation.
Coordinating volunteers maintaining records and assisting with occasional landscape maintenance and construction.
Supports Horticultures greenhouse operations Streamside Desert Butterfly Exhibit browse gardens and the nursery depending on assigned weekend and weekday duties
Familiar with industry standards in plant maintenance and propagation techniques and possess comprehensive knowledge of native annual invasive and tropical plant species.
Maintains electronic records related to plant inventory and documentation entering daily work records into the database
Adhering SOG/SOP protocols as well as the HRIS time reporting system all of which require proficient computer skills.

Candidates meet the minimum qualifications of this position if they meet the minimum education and experience listed onthe vacancy announcement. Vacancy specific knowledge skills and abilities (KSAs) and/or management preferences are notrequired. Applicants who possess the following are preferred:

Management Prefers:

  • Demonstrated experience with plant maintenance procedures used in arid native and/or tropical plant collections.
  • Demonstrated experience of plant cultivation such as watering propagation Integrated Pest Management and/or fertilization.
  • Proven knowledge of equipment used for landscaping including mowers weed eater blowers bobcat forklift and/or other assigned equipment.
  • Proven working knowledge using Microsoft Office for research data entry inventory and/or record keeping.

Position/Physical Requirements:

  • Job offer is contingent upon passing a pre-employment screen conducted by assigned provider.
  • Typical work schedule is Monday Friday 7am 4pm
  • Requires working rotating weekend and holiday work for 12 months out of the year on average once every 2 months.
  • Must be able to perform the physical demands of the job for extended and irregular periods under adverse conditions in all extremes of weather.
  • Must meet DNCR Fleet Safety Guidelines and have ability to obtain and maintain a valid drivers license issued from within the United States or be able to obtain one within 90 days of employment.
  • Required to participate in an occupational health program due to contact with animal containment areas.
  • Must be able to lift between 30-50 pounds of aggregate material to a height of 18 inches and transport it laterally a distance of 4.5 feet on a frequent basis.
  • Considered Essential/Mandatory Staff and required to work on adverse weather days during zoo emergencies and may be called to work special events.
  • Selected candidate will be a team player and maintain effective work relationships.
  • Safely operate horticulture equipment.

Minimum Education and Experience

High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma

AND

two years of progressive experience in horticultural work;

OR

Associates degree in agriculture and natural resources greenhouse and grounds maintenance horticulture technology landscape gardening or closely related field from an appropriately accredited institution;

OR

An equivalent combination of education and experience.

Necessary Special Qualifications

May require North Carolina Commercial Drivers License.
